Question O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction

So in the midst of diagnosing a problem I scanned the car to see what codes it was throwing. It came back with the obvious ones cause I have no cats but the one that threw me for a loop said o2 sensor heater circuit malfunction bank 1. Now I know that bank one means the one attached to the EM but does that mean the sensor is bad or its having a wiring issure?

Thanks. Would that make the idle inconsistent and the Air/Fuel ratio go crazy?

Ok so onto my next question. Has anybody used a "universal" o2 sensor? They have those at the parts store in my area. basically its a o2 sensor with no connector. You would use the connector from the OE one im assuming. Any ideas/feedback?

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. Just splice the wires.

reply to Bosch colors

I also bought a Bosch sensor for front from Pep Boys ($80, lowest price).
It shouldnt matter about the color codes, as the harness only connects in one way.
Added tip, check if the old one was torqued tight, when I went to change mine, it seemed very loose, as there is very little thread area, I installed the new one anyway, will always wonder if tightening would have solved the problem.

Universals work fine, I use the universal for the second O2 sensor as I needed the extra length.
Just make sure you connect the wires according to the diagrams that come with the universal.

Can someone post a direct link to a good EM o2 sensor. Im having trouble telling which sensors are for which part of the car. Im currently using rockauto to do my searching, here is their list of sensors.

Anything's good, just watch out for the universals as they don't have the stock connector, you have to do splicing and wiring. Check autozone.com or advanceautoparts.com and they'll list the OEM sensor and you can make your choice from there...

So if the o2 sensor says "front" i can still use it for any part of the car? im confused. I understand the universals need to be spliced, but i havnt looked at the o2 sensor under the car yet, just at the EM.
