Induction velocity
Here is the problem I am faced with. I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money on a short ram intake and I wanted to build my own. So I bought a MAS adapter and when it arrived in the mail, alas, it fits the MAS housing, but the outlet is 4.5" wide. I did some research and K&N makes a filter that will attach directly to this size outlet. Generally this would sound like a good idea to me because there will be even more air going into the intake manifold. So here is my question:
Will using this type of application affect how my car performs as far as fuel and air mixture being controlled by the MAS? Also since the opening is pretty large, will the large diameter affect the air velocity any?
Thanks for your input.

The throttle restrictor plate in the MAS/MAF is there just to make it so that you don't run into problems. Your throttle body and restrictor plate are the biggest bottlenecks in your intake system. You shouldn't run into any problems so long as you reset your ECU after installation. Otherwise you'll prolly stall at idle for a bit.
EDIT: This isn't forced induction though. Moving to engine tech.

Reset ECU
Yeah, like Andrew said. I had this unit complete with the K&N filter and I found my car was loud but lethargic. Could be due to the fact that hot air was being sucked in. With my current set up, the Lan is way more sesponsive. Nice you already have an adapter, why not try fitting an intake pipe on it and the filter on the end of the pipe. let me know how it goes!!!
Oh yeah, when I installed the SRI, the ECU reset itself automatically. I didn't see any check engine light. But, when I modified the whole intake system, I had to reset the ECU manually by disconnecting the battery hot wire for 10 minutes.
No "Service Engine Soon" light anymore.

my light never came on when i put the "ghetto ram" on my ride...however, i did idle rather oddly untill i reset my ecu....
The light wont nessicarily come on. Yours did since you removed the MAS, and the ECU went ape**** ( but of course you knew that).

I am going to install an adapter and a huge scoop under my car today. I'll post some pix and comments regarding performance for the benefit of folks who are considering going ghetto...

If the CEL hasn't triggered and the car runs fine, the ECU is adapting steadily or already done it. Remember, the thing does have its own noggin'. Just only +/- 10% from factory.
where u get the adapter
hey i'm just wondering guys where did u get that mas adapter plate... cause all i really want is a short ram and i think i'd save a lot of money if i just got the mas adapter plate .. thanks
I got it from www.driverfx.com. The manufacturer is Vibrant and the part number is 1995. You may run into the same problem I am faced with though. I emailed Vibrant and they told me they make two filters that can fit right into the adapter. The part numbers are 2161C and 2163, both of which can be bought from www.driverfx.com. I'm buying the filter today and should be able to fit it on this coming weekend. In all actuality, I'm going to try and reproduce the RMR intake, which only consists of the filter, adapter, and a funky heat shield that incorporates the stock air snorkel.
