Grinding noise. Help!

I just noticed a grinding noise when my car idles. It goes away when I push the clutch in. What gives? Is my clutch getting ready to go out?

Thanks for the help.

Is your heater on when this happens?

Mine does the same thing, only it sounds like a lot of valve ticking. Car in neutral, heater on, clutch out, it ticks very loudly. When I push the clutch in, it stops.

That and when it started to do this, which was in March, my clutch was fine. Now May, my clutch is slipping like crazy, but I also beat the hell out of it too.

It might help if you were a little more specific. Everytime you car is idle from startup, no matter how long you drive until turned off (or clutch in)? Low or high pitched? Flat grinding noise or staggered grinding (Like gears with teeth grinding)? Can you identify at all the area of the car that it's comming from? (You should because if it happens at idle then you can walk around the car) Open up the hood, lay on the ground, check it out then repost

Sorry about that. My car was warmed up and I have no accesories on. It is low pitched noices and it flat. It sounds like it is coming from the clutch. I had my wife push the clutch in and the noise went away. Today was the first time I noticed it and that was by accident. I had my door open because I was trying to listen to my Greddy catback.

is it a grind or a squeal cause if it's more like a squeal and then goes away when you push the clutch in, it's the pilot bearing or the input shaft bearing. I doubt it's from your engine if it goes away when you puch the clutch in.

I would say take it to the dealer, esspecially if it's still under warrenty. If it is under warrenty (even 60k) most likely they will tell you whats wrong even if the problem isn't covered. The description is a little too general unless someone has seen this specific problem before and it sounds more and more like a transmission issue. When the clutch is let out and the engine is reengaged with the layshaft it might be causing something around the transmission to vibrate making a wierd sound or it could be a problem within the transmission. Either way if you don't get a water tight answer I would get it to someone to look at asap..

you sure it's not a sort of fast low clicking sound...that would be your throw out bearing...

I will listen to it again. As for taking it to the the stealership, that will never happen. Looks like I need to find me a good mechanic.

It can't be the throwout bearing cause he said it's when he's idling. When he's idling the clutch is engaged. The thrwout bearing only makes noise with the clutch disengaged, and it would be a screaming whine.

^ uh no...it's the opposite way around. Throwout bearing makes noise when idling with clutch engaged.
Wait. Just thought of something. When youre idling you have it in neutral with the clutch up right? Just wanna make sure.

Sorry, but your wrong. Throwout is when the clutch is disengaged. Like when you "throw it out of one gear and in to another" the clutch is pressed in... there fore it is the throwout bearing. when your foot is off of the clutch ( meaning it is engaged with the flywheel ) it is the input shaft bearing and/or the pilot bearing. I'm not being a dick like alot of other people do on this forum...but I work at a shop and i'm in school now for this. but if you don't believe me, heres a link i found to explain it to you too. the link is for a honda civic cause it's the first site i found on google, but all standard trannys are the same concept whether it's a 69 chevy or a 2004 Lancer http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=246971.
Like i said earlier i'm not trying to be a dick, i just spent 30,000 dollars for schooling, i just didn't want you to mislead others.
