Tons of random engine noises, not sure how to diagnose

My girlfriends 03 is the reason i'm on evom. I'm mechanically handy and can diagnose the usual stuff and even the more oddball things that might happen to a car. However her 72,000 mile car makes some noises that I just dont know what it is.

There's ticking sometimes (not like valve tap though, but it does sound like the valves)

sometimes there's a humming.

I'm not sure where to bring it to, to figure out what it is. Her timing belt hasnt been done yet (unless it was done pre-52,000 miles with the first owner [which we all know it wasnt]) but there's no reason why it would be that.

Would you recommend bringing it to a mitsubishi dealership over a random local shop? There's really no way to describe it short of taking video and having you view it...and I doubt you'll be able to hear it all. Not to mention the sounds are only sometimes.

Now i've read the 4g93 is a natural loud engine, but to make this much noise (not loud, but constant and different types) is not only annoying, but worrying me.

Yes our engines are loud. You will hear the valves and cylinders ticking, that's normal. If you want you can get an oil change to aleave the noise. Humming can be caused the by fan turning on when the car needs cooling. if you've hit the 72 mark, the car needs the timing belt changed since its' recommended on our cars to be done at 60k. If you wanna go an extra step, which you should, do a SeaFoam treatment on the car and see if it fixes anything and makes her run better! :thumps up:

All normal Lancer sounds; but it's about time to change that belt. I've heard adding some oil additives (Lucas, etc) will help with the noise if it's really that bad.
