NO MAF sensor?

A while back I was looking at readers rides and I came across a Lancer w/no MAF sensor. Just an intake. WTF? Just curious, I know on hondas we could run a loop in and out of the ECU itself to do away with the MAF sensor. I wish I can remember the ride it was on. I would post it. Let me now what you guys think.

It wouldnt work too well. I've forgot to plug mine in after installing the adapter, and the engine reved to 3500 rpmand then back down to a choking idle. performance wise there would be no way for the ECU to tell how much air is coming in and would not be able to fix fuel levels accordingly

No MAS on our car equals dead engine. You can remove the MAS but you'll need to install a piggyback and an accompanying pressure sensor so you can run a MAP sensor.

Speaking for Andrew, he's using the AEM EMS with a pressure sensor placed in the intake manifold. I'm thinking of going a similar route with the Greddy e-manage.

I thought the e-manage still required the stock ecu to piggy back off of. lemme know I am interested

After talking very briefly w/ Andrew this afternoon, I'm gonna be looking into it more. The e-manage does in fact have a pressure sensor, which is the same thing he's using to run a MAP style sensor as opposed to the MAS we currently use. I'll be looking into it when I have free time here at work and post my findings.

no MAS

i was putting on an aftermarket intake and found out my mass intake doesn't work anymore and if it's plugged in, my car won't idle. i must of shorted something out. if i keep it unplugged the car idles but the check engine light comes on.
i called the dealer and it's $288! do i need this or will it just richen the mixture and/or advance the timing? if it does, is there a way i can 'trick' it into thinking it has one, maybe the resister mod? there are about 6-8 wires so i don't know which ones i'd loop back or put a resister on. i could also get a used one or aftermarket. do they even make aftermarket MAS's for the lancer (US/OZ)?

nope dalin...no aftermarket ones...i mean u can get an aftermarket MAS (universal) but they are like $1,000 and need a fuel computer or something. also you NEED your MAS..so i would go get it fixed asap.

ahh!!

ahh MAS sensor =( ... such bad memories.. all my friends had hondas and before that i had a crx which was carburator... and man when i got my car.. had it for a month.. all friends said get an intake.. and at the time no intakes were available ....so it was CUSTOM intake time!! i was a newbie at cars still and none of my friends had any experience with a MAS so we took it out and we dismantled it and one of my friends said that honey comb thing is like blockin air so lets take it out!.. hahaah not fun! as my car when sttarted would idle up and down and would bog out and when i floored it, it would bog near the high rpm and get stuck and .. man it was just terrible... gas mileage became a whopping 150 a tank from 300+ =(..... had to go to dealership and tried to say .."IT JUST BECAMe like that!" ahah but didnt work.. so i ended payin 400 to get it replaced and labor and all that stuff.... =(... all i can say is.. DONT MESS WITH THE MAFF

Re: MAS or no MAS

when i connect it (i guess it's bad or i created another problem by accident) it idles up and down and when i get it gas it starts to die. i then tried disconnecting it (at least for now) and it ran at a higher than normal idle, it appears that i'm getting worse gas mileage but i'm not posative, but it also seems like i'm getting more power becuase there's this one hill on the freeway where i cannot accellerate above 60 in 5th gear but now can easily go much faster. the check engine light is on which bugs me a little. i'm torn on what to do. the dealer said it was special order (5 day) $288 part. there's a couple used part locators that emailed me that they found one. i'll see what they say on the price. yea, it appears it's running real rich. i'm suprised the o2 sensor doesn't compensate for this or maybe it does but not totally.

Re: used MAS found

ok. i just ordered a used (2003) one, from a company that does nationwide searches on auto parts, for $125. they wanted $288 at the dealer so it's not as bad as i thought.

ok i hate to have only noticed this now but are you sure the mas inst on backwards sounds stupid but i had those exact same problems installing a aem intake on a 240 sx and the reason why its was looking the same on both sides and i in a moment of extream stupidy installed it backwords. turned it around we were all set

Re: MAS or no MAS

since the MAS sensor connector is part of the plastic tube, wouldn't the connector have to be backwards (facing the opposite direction) as well?

well the only way you can get it backwards is if the MAS adapter was also 2.5-2.75", which it usually isn't. but if it is, it's worth a check.

car-part.com can find you a MAS for at least $35. same parts as on the 1.8 mirages. a few places replied to my quote with that price a while back.

also make sure that the tube back to the valve cover is on tight. its an inlet for uncounted air. it might not be causing the problem but its best get it out of the way.

and one of the last things to check for is that if you have any aftermarket electronics(gauges, lights, stereo amp) that they're all wired in correctly. i found that my AF gauge was putting feedback into the wire and made my car run in limp mode.
