Put the car in the air, Joseph K is competely right. It's definitely a resonator, or, think of it as a second muffler. Wonder why the Lancer is in Lexus territory as far as interior noise? Part of it is alot of styrofoam, part of it is the two mufflers, and also, once you get it in the air, you might see an abnormal amout of grease on the undercarriage, and covering EVERYTHING. From what I hear, most of the more expensive cars started using this technique to dampen road noise, but that the Lancer has about twice as much as the IS300. A little off post, but, some interesting information none the less.

As for the "second cat".... the resonator is where alot of restriction is caused. It won't cause you to fail emissions, and it does give the car a lot more aggressive sound by it's absence.

I'm fairly certain he's correct (without having actually disected them). Ask a Lancer Tech. ROCK or someone from RMR would definitely know, if not just a random person who's had exhaust work done.

I still have all my chips on 2 cats.

There are two cats and a resonator

If you look at your exhaust you will see from the motor it goes exhaust manifold, cat, down pipe, cat, resonator, pipe and then muffler. But the resonator does restrict the exhaust alot I replaced the one off my old car with custom pipes and it made it a bit deeper sounding and freed the exhaust up tremendously.

That's why I am waiting for RRM to come out with that mid section pipe to see if he puts the resonator in it or not before I get a custom mid pipe done.
