ok, just wanted to update my progress which is really nothing. I had about an hour to work on it. I got the car jacked up, motor mount off, Bothbelts off and then the crank pulley off. I removed the PS bottle bracket but i think that should of stayed.

i'll probaly have another hour or so to work on the car tomorrow, so as it goes, remove the 14mm bolts that hold the PS hard line and the banjo bolt so i can hopefully tuck the hardline away. And after that i guess its time to remove the covers and align everything and mark it. That should finish up my hour.

If anyone wants pictures let me know now.

OK the job didn't go so well, I need some serious help.

When i took the covers off and attempted to get TDC i saw white marks but i'm sure no one did a belt before on this car. Anyways when i lined up the crank i found the cam to be 1.5 teeth behind or so but it lined up with the white marks.

So i matched it up with that thinking it was good since thats how it came in. Put back everything and started it up. It sounded nasty and i put my hand on the valve cover and it felt like it was knocking from there. It wasn't missing but it sounded off. So i thought to the timing was off and i redid it. This time i did the actually alignments marks. So i moved it up almost 2 teeth. So everything lined up and hand cranked it twice to confirm everything lined up and then i just started it and it sounds even WORST!!!

It sounds like a motor thats out of oil. a lot of KLACK KLACK type of noise from the valve cover. I called it a day and now i'm trying to do some research on as to what i did wrong.

Anyone have any ideas now? Does it sound like i'm off on the timing? I didn't refill the PS fluid but i dont think the pump would make that type of noise. When i started it up i only let it run for like 20 seconds and it sounded really bad so i didn't want to wait for it to warm up.

Any chance of me tightening the belt too much or something or any other possible parts that i might of messed up one. I did water pump and timing belt and the 2 outer belts.

oh yea, i had white marks on the cam and crank. and like i said the white marks were 2 degrees off, they aligned the cam gear mark with a spot before the OEM arrow for TDC. when i lined up the cam mark to the real one it was about 1-1.5 teeth ahead of the crank mark.

to confirm that crank mark is a little circle on one of the teeth and there is a dot that only shows up when you are near TDC and it goes away after.

All the marks need to be aligned to have your timing right. That includes BOTH of the cam gear marks and the crank mark. I would highly recommend removing everything and aligning it back up correctly.

i've pulled off the covers and confirmed everything is back to where its needed to be. the OEM markings this time. I started it up and it gave smoke where the PS and AC was. I figured it was due to the belt being over tighten and possibly, the PS fluid dripping. Loosened the belt and started it. the engine sounds better, but i think the tensioner for the belt is broken.

When you loosen the tensioner its suppose to somewhat angle it self to give you slack to put on the belt and when you tighten it, it should go back to a near flush like state with all the other pulleys. Well it doesn't it someone cocked at an angle. And it is making a LOT of noise. the noise from the tensioner area is a LOT louder then the engine. After the car warmed up the KLACKing noise from the valve cover went away. I drove it around the block and it doesn't seem to be misfiring or anything. It idles decent and drives smooth. But the noise is very present.

I think i broken that tensioner... Well maybe bent it, reason why i have that awful noise. The bolt that does the adjusting is sitting at a angle almost hanging out of the slit that it was design to sit in. I cant get it to sit flush. I cant seem to find one locally. i've found it online at some mitsu site asking for $30.

I have a feeling that the valves MIGHT be bent, is there a easy way to check this other then pulling off the head.

As promised man here you go, this first one shows the marks for the camshaft, I could not get the right angle but they are lined up properly, there is a notch on the front of the camgear and I went after this pic and put some whit paint on the back side to help confirm it was lined up.

This next one is for the crank timing gear, there is a little dimple on the front of the gear and the plate on the back of the gear also has a little pointer that must be lined up vertical with the dot on the block

Check your compression of your cylinders this will tell you if you have bent the valves or not

well i started it today and oddly enough. it sound decent.

The PS /AC belt tensioner is bent and causing some minor noise. I want to replace this, is it just as simple as taking of the 14mm locking nut off and sliding it off. Or is the more tricky way to go about it.

Yes it is I ended up pulling the whole motor out of that car I did the head on and replaced it with another they brought to me. Pull off the locking nut (of course the pain in the butt bolt, I have ratchet wrenchs which helped ALOT lol) and you can pull the adjusting bolt straight out (toward drivers side of car) and lift the pully out too

I understand this thread is a little bit old but this information might help some.

I would advise getting a library card from your local library system and that may give you access to the Chilton online information. If you can do that then you will be able to log into Chilton and get information about maintenance and how-tos.

The local Pierce county library system gives me access to the Chilton web site and it's very useful and saves me money not having to get a membership.
