power steering pump failing?

when the car is running and there is no pressure applied to the steering wheel, there is a slow air leak-like noise coming from under the dashboard in the cabin. i try to trace it in the engine bay by cannot sucessfully locagte it. when pressure is applied to the wheelw either left or right the noise goes away. that is why my guess is the power steering pump.

anyone have any ideas what may be causing this if it isnt the power steering and how i may fix it?

Thanks

Is the belt on there tight?

Who needs PS/AC anyways?

been going on for a few days now...now fluid loss in tank, nothing leaking on ground, steering is still normal (no change since noise started).

could the tensioner pulley be going out and causing the noise? I know the P/S pump itself could be bad but i'm trying to eliminate the small stuff first.
