What's the best air filter?

I'm trying to stay in HS class in autox for now until I get some more practice, but that means I can't get a full intake yet. Does anyone know the difference (aside from price) between the Ralli||Art, K&N and HKS (and any other) filters? Which is better?

I've always used K&N filters, had nothing but good results.

Good luck getting one of those Ralliart/Pipercross (PiperX provides the foam filter element) units, HKS doesn't make one...the stock one is an awful piece of white paper/cotton so I guess 'coda is right about K&N. Can't think of anyone else off hand who makes a replacement panel filter.

do all those companies make panel filters that fit in your stock air box? I know RMR sells a good one for like $40. Also, I'm not sure exactly how the rules read, but you could try that "shade tree short ram" where you use the clips to hold the box open for more air. Check the rule book on that one though.

Isn't the RMR one a rebadged K&N? Does it even have their logo stenciled on it? The Ralliart panel filter piece is really nice: Would've been neat the see that red aluminum frame!

well, here's the HKS one:

I dunno how well it works...I think I'd much rather have the Ralli||Art, but it's hard to find

So where exactly is the Lancer application from HKS?

Whoooooa. You seem to have done some research, just not enough. I use a complete HKS SMF intake kit designed for use on the 3G Eclipses of any engine type. It's a complete MAS adaptor and intake assembly, not a simple panel filter. You can see pics of it in my car registry or gallery. The Evo air box is significantly different than the stock Lancer one, no Evo panel would ever drop in. Look at the Ralliart pics I posted earlier and the shape of the Evo stock air box. The Lancer panel is almost perfectly square while the Evo one is more rectangular.

Whooooa...strange. Maybe they are the same. The Evo air box always looked stranger, probably its funnel ram. That's it right there so hell, get some dimensions on the thing and find out. If the panels really are the same, that's really good news for folks who might not want something full blown. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ralliart+panel <---Hell, get his. Wish I would've leaped before I looked.

Yeah, the K&N filters for the Evo and Lancer are the same model, so I just assumed...I ~really~ want the Ralli//Art one, but if I can't find it, I don't know anybody with an HKS one that can compare it to the K&N...plus its sorta ugly ^_^;;;

Yes I think the RMR one is a rebadged K&N, and the pic on RMR's site shows their name stenciled on.

As for the Ralliart one, is that larger than the stock filter? If so, it probably isn't allowed in the stock category. "Replacement elements larger than stock may not be used in order to hold the stock enclosure open"

Drop-in panel filter

You can buy these filters from:

Vividracing.com sells Ralliart panel filter. $120
Gruppe-s.com sells HKS panel filter. $40

I have the Ralliart panel and it's very nice. It fits better than stock paper filter as if it was designed for the Evo air box. Someone claimed that it made 3-5hp to the wheels. Down side, hte price is way to high but it's a Ralliart.

HKS is much cheaper at just $40. Not sure how well it fits.
