Cat replacement question

I was recently reading about people getting exausts for their Lancers and how the Lancer has two cats. I also read that most replace one cat with either a test pipe or a high flow cat. I was wondering if its possible to replace one cat with a test pipe and replace the other with a high flow cat? If so, is it extremely loud? I figured if it was a high flow and a test pipe instead of two test pipes it would lessen sound slightly, asumeing its possible that is...

first of all you can only replace one cat with a down pipe/ hi flo cat(second one also only one under the car). The other one to my understanding is in the header. So to replace the first cat with a free flowing exhaust you will need to get a new header.

With a high flow cat and a downpipe it would probably be quite a bit louder than with both cats. Probably almost as loud as no cats. Thats just my opinion from what i have experienced.

Um...you cant put a hi flo cat and a down pipe. You can put one of the other in for the second cat and you can just get newheaders to replace the first one. And yes its loud *** hell with no cats InsANE!

if u replace the header and first cat sadude, u have a choice of leaving on your second cat (downstream) or going for a testpipe. heres one on ebay for sale-

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

i am trying to get one, i'll let u know how it goes. and stay off the trees! j/k

Not sure about the Kamikaze, but some other headers (RRM and I think RPW) have a place to put the first O2 sensor (although you need a resistor to make it read what it wants to read), and any emissions legal hi-flo cat will have everything needed for the second sensor.

well teh kamikaze header I am getting does have a bung for the first O2 sensor, so that problem is solved

sorry for being so dumb but what is the stock size for our exhaust piping? if I were to get a racing/hi-flow cat off of ebay I should be cool since teh 2nd O2 sensor bung will be there

lancerj...can't do the test pipe since my kamikaze will remove the first cat

thanks guys

No, you are thinking of a test pipe. The downpipe is the pipe that connects the exauast manifold or header to the cat. Therefore, the cat actually bolts to the downpipe. Sorry if that's stating the obvious, but I don't wanna confuse anyone.

im just clarifying this sadude, the first cat we are all talking about is in the exhaust manifold. the kamikaze header will replace that. it also comes withe the downpipe/flexpipe that is then connected to the SECOND cat. i think our stock piping is about 1 and 3/4 inch. correct me if im wrong

Well, from looking in during removal, I'd say the stock downpipe is roughly . . . 2mm.

Just kidding.

1.75", damn that is small, even the upgrade piping of the header is the same.

i guess i'll have to wait till I pick it up tonight and then go from there

okay update, just got the kamikaze header. its a 2.5" outlet, so should I get the same size racing cat or should I go a step down?

also any advantages to having all 2.5" as opposed to the step down?

thanks

yes.....too big of an opening in your exhaust piping will cause you to lose torque. 2 1/4 exhaust piping is the right spec for our car. And just a quote to keep in mind...."bigger is not always better"
