Engine done for?

I have an 03 Lancer ES that died on the way home and after trying to start it again, it made a weird noise as if something was free spinning when trying to start it. After looking under the hood, the alternator belt is spinning when trying to start but the timing belt isn't moving. I also noticed the engine put out a code for the camshaft position sensor, although that could have been there before and I just never noticed.

Having said that, are there any tests I can do to see if the engine is still fine or is it pretty much done for?

How did this go? Were you able to recover? Also, how many miles did the car have?
