Engine Swap?
Engine Swap?
Hi,
I have been searching around and have found no clear cut answer to my question.
Can the 4g94 be swapped out for a 4g63t out of a '99 Eclipse GS-T? If it can what are the factors I have to consider. I have a 2002 Mistubishi Lancer OZ Rally with the 4g94 engine. I would really like to put in a engine with turbo and a DOHC. Are the dimensions of the engines and transmissions similar? Or will there be heavy modifications to be done to make the engine fit. I am not really interested in head swapping or TB's so don't mention them. I would like to swap the entire works. I am just interested in knowing what factors would be involved and maybe a guess at how much the work would be. I am not dead-set on the 4g63t either but it would seem an ideal choice given it is in the Evo VII. My main focus is will it fit? If it doesn't where won't it fit? If it is a hood that can be fixed pretty easily. If you have to start cutting internal metal well that's a different story. Well there you have it, please serious replies only...kind of at my wits end here trying to find information on this subject.
Thanks,
Brent

The practical answer is no. You could get it to fit but it'd be cheaper to just go out and either buy the 99' Eclipse or just an Evo. Plus with the Evo you get the advantage of AWD as well, not sure what the 99' Eclipse had. You can turbo the 4g94 rather easily so if its just the turbo your after then thats a potential idea.
yeah, i really cant awnser the question, the gst is FWD so that wouldnt be a factor. honestly you could just go trade in your oz and buy an old gst maybe u would have to fork over an extra 1k. but yeah if it is a turbo that u want, why not just turbo the engine, i think there is great potential in this engine, its just that its fairly new and not alot of people have gone all the way with it. Sorry i couldnt awnser your real question tho
The engine itself should fit barring small relocation modifications, yet the engine is backwards in the engine bay compared to lancers. What you'd do with that is anyones guess. You need custom axles too. Only thing seriously discussed on the boards is the 02 and up eclipse 4g94, cause they flipped the orientation of that engine, and the wiring harness is amazingly similar. May need custom axles, the tranny's should swap, maybe. Why don't you try it and find out ,then let us know. Starter location may also be a problem.
If you or someone you know is willing to spend the money and time to do all the custom fab work it will work. If you do do it (and I have heard enough people saying they are going to do swaps and never do) then please post pictures. You will be a pioneer to the site and the North American Lancer community.
Iam not sure how hard the install will be but Iam sure there will be quite a bit of work to get it in. Remember that it is not a Honda and therefor not all parts are interchangeable.

Well, I am not a metal fabricator. However my Dad is...he built his '67 Camaro from ground up using a '68 427 cu. in. engine from a Stingray Corvette. With the Moroso Rockcrusher transmission. He had to custom fab alot on that car...so I know he could probably do it. It would be a matter of if he will do it. I'll have to talk to him..and see if he would consider it. I'm going to talk to him later today. I'll keep you posted.
i'm in the same boat, i'm thinking of swapping out a 4g63 out of a 90-94 talon tsi. My friends have the knowledge in doing custom work and are some of the best at building cars and working on them. We are going to be taking a look and seeing what is all possible and if it is worth are time and money investing into, we already have a few engines and transmission laying around let around 4 tsi's that are part cars since we have no titles. But if anyone has any info on doing the swap it would be helpful, We already figured in putting in a new transmission and everything... were most likely removing the engine out in a week or two and going to lower a 4g63 in to just see how off it is and if its possibly to do with out much rebuilding the bay....

just figured i'd let everyone know we checked out the engine bay of my 02 lancer and of a 91 tsi we have and they are pretty damn close and will be swapping the 4g93 into the lancer, i just need to get ahold of a 5spd setup from a wrecked lancer, (i'll need everything from the clutch, pedals, lines, etc... all but the transmission) If anyone has these parts and is willign to donate or sell them to me let me know! But we will begin on swapping the engine in a few weeks, i have to get a few items fixed on my beater car so i have something to drive around. As of right now we are just shooting to make it a fwd cause converting to awd we would have to reinforce the entire rear end and all so the frame doesnt twist. Once we finishe the swap we will be adidng an intercooler and everything else, are goal is to break the 12.93 road race has put up (yes itwill be with a 4g63 instead but is still a goal to beat!!)
Also if anyone knows the differences between the evo wiring harness and the lancer harness please let me know. i need to figure it out so i know weather or not i have to gut the car and rerun everything... I will keep everyone updated and will post pictures once we start in a few weeks!!!
thanks

The 1 and 2g DSM have their t-belt on the wrong side to the lancer. It takes too much effort in fab and cut parts. It's like saying a 2g DSM owner suffering from crankwalk go out and buy an Evo 7 motor for his car. Not cost effective.
Lancer people have to start looking at Evo 4 and up to cut some of the cost down. Then, you have to finesse the wire harness.

You didn't look hard enough. The topic has been repeatedly beaten to death and ressurected so many times that it's virtually an immortal question. "Why the sky is blue?" sort of quamire.

The best FAQ in the web that has been R&D by both mirage and lancer owners. This Q has been haunting people's mind since 97. The last topic.

I'm assuming typo. All 3g eclipse RS/GS (+00 . . . DSM truly died in 99) owners would have comitted suicide if their car is blessed by a G94. It's a G64.
