Question Driving in the snow

I will have to drive from Sacramento to Reno tomorrow and it looks like I will need to bring chains. I know the manual says to not use them, but can I maybe use cables?
Has anyone used chains or cables on a 2002 or 2003 Lancer OZ?

California Highway Patrol has checkpoints that require "chains or cables" I have to drive over mountains and some steep grades.
I grew up in Minnesota, so I know how to drive in the snow, but I don’t feel like getting a ticket.
