Driving position in Evo vs. standard Lancer
Driving position in Evo vs. standard Lancer
I sat in a standard US lancer at the dealership the other day (when I put in my deposit for the evo...), and it has a HORRIBLE cockpit and driving position. The wheel is in the wrong place and not properly adjustable, and the whole thing seemed quite cramped. I can't imagine anyone ever buying that car. Compared to, eg, a WRX, there's really no comparison.
Of course the Evo has different, much better seats, but otherwise how does its driving position feel compared to the standard Lancer? Anyone?
I hope I'm not funny-shaped and just never noticed it before.

Yes i have also sat in a lancer it is pretty cramped inside that car the back seats are really uncomforatable also... but when i went to the autoshow a few days ago i looked inside the EVO and it looks pretty roomy the car is wider and longer so it shouldnt be cramped the guy at the exhibit wouldnt let me sit in it
.. so im just going by look.. i also have put down a deposit on an EVO blue prefibly yellow next choice, EVO VII GSR, at MSRP Price so i dont have to worry about dealer markups..so hopefully the car will come at around 22-24,000 MSRP...

Hmmm... Interesting. Anyone out there sat in both? Even a eurospec or JDM Evo?
Every time I read a review of the Evo they rave about the hardcore, perfect sporting driving position, which would have to almost be the opposite of the Lancer US version. I mean, I could barely get in the car because the wheel was in the way, and I'm only 6' tall. I know that sport cars are often kind of cramped, but in the lancer it seemed like everything was just in the wrong place.
My deposit is also for MSRP, for a white or silver. I think I'm going to get them to switch the order (eg., silver then white), though.

Can I ask you guys what dealer you put down your deposit at ? Because my dealer, says it waiting for the info from the reps. Maybe I can get the name and a phone # so I can get them to call there and see whats up.. Since we know its coming by spring of 03....

You guys are crazy. First of all, the width issue on the Lancers, the extra width is maintained in the body kit, the interior is no different than the one in the evo. Yes, different seats and wheel, but same cabin. Second, i dont understand the cramped comment, Im 6'1 and fit quite comfortably in my OZ. Also about the back seat, it is bigger than almost any car in the same size class. And dont think the Evo will have a more comfortable back seat, remember there is a steel frame running directly behind those seats to maintain body stiffness. Since when was the Lancer about comfort anyhow. I thought the evo was a track car for the street? Maybe you guys should look for a different car.
You need to reread. It's not a question of it not being cushy enough, it's a question of it being so badly ergonomically designed that I was actually surprised. The wheel is way too close to the floor for the seats, iirc, and in general stuff seemed to be in the wrong place. I think you could tilt the wheel up, but then it was at the wrong angle. Compare your OZ to a WRX sometime and feel the difference (besides the six grand or so, I know..)
Different seats and wheel are all it would potentially take to make the Evo have a really good driving position -- there is plenty of volume in the Lancer cockpit, it's just suspect design that makes it uncomfortable. I'm curious if it actually is enough different from the standard Lancer.

The 6 has an absolutely perfect driving position with the wheel being height adjustable and a very good seat. Even long journeys are no problem at all and the only thing that beats the 6 from the cars that I have driven with for long distances is an E55.
I've sat in a 7 and the driving position seems similar bt haven't driven one. Oh, and BTW I'm about 6"2 (183 cms)
