Question Something that I've been thinking about...

Is the built in "Overdrive" that is in our 02-03 OZ's simular to MIVEC? Or is it just no competition?

I'm pretty sure everyone here knows what overdrive I'm talking about. I have an automatic and in maybe first or second gear around 35-45 (depending on gear) its like the car gives that extra "UMPH" and really starts to pull.

Quite fun if I must say... But anyway is it even close to MIVEC or is MIVEC like 10x better?

Overdrive is in almost every automatic build in the last...lets say 45 years. MIVEC is something completly different. They are in no way simular.

I asume (not ever driving an auto lancer) that there is a push button to turn the over drive off and that feeling your getting is just the transmision shifting to a lower gear.

it's interesting how mass media has made "overdrive" mean exactly the opposite of what everyone thinks it means. the concept of overdrive is to use lower gearing to reach higher speeds, but does mean a lower rate of acceleration. you won't feel more power out of "overdrive". for an auto, that usually just means to engage 4th gear.

"let's kick it into overdrive!"

oh yeah. mivec is 1 million times better. no really, it is.

MIVEC, first off is within the engine (head) and the "overdrive" function is within the transmission. Get your facts straight before making threads like this plz.

overdrive is a gearset in which the output shaft turns faster than the input shaft. As rhyzin said its usally just 4th gear in an auto.
MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing-and-lift Electronic Control) is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Mitsubishi. MIVEC varies the timing and lift of valves by using two different camshaft profiles.

By the way...there is no "overdrive" button for the transmission, theres just the gears of L,2,3 (which is overdrive off) and D which is automatic overdrive. You shift the gears your self for overdrive...no button to push

#1 There is no "Overdrive button" in the 02-03s like there are in other cars.

If there is a gear change I would feel it. My point is the car DOES NOT change gears when this "overdrive" kicks in. I've felt it do this in at least 1-2 gear. I never kept my foot on the pedal to have it pull in its last gear cause by then I would be going about 85-90ish.

#2 Mr. SLVOZ_03 chill the hell out. If I made a "noobish" statement like that then its obvious that I didn't know. Your school teachers don't jump down your throat for something they didn't teach you yet. Its not like everybody knows what MIVEC is anyway...I'm trying to learn. Geez....

If there is anyone here who has an auto, jump in your car, turn onto a straight road or get to a red light and step on the gas over half way and keep it there until about 45, 50. If you don't feel the car start to accelerate faster around 37-42 then it just must be me slipping out of my seat because I know I feel something.

I drive an auto and if I manual shift it if i cruise around 3k rpm and mash it I feel it pull a lot harder in 1,2,3 gear. In D which is overdrive you are probably feeling peek torque....
