insurance question

I was just wondering. If you purchase alot of mods for your car and keep all the receipts etc. If you are in an accident and it was not your fault, does the other persons insurance pay for the damage to your mods as well? Lets say the car is totaled. I was just wondering because I've been saving up for some things and my roommate brought up the issue of doing all this work to your car and just getting into an accident and being screwed.

No, you have to make your insurance aware of the mods so they can adjust your policy accordingly. If you have say 5000$ worth of mods you car is essentially "worth" 5000$ more in the eyes of the insurance company. Your roommates are right, if you get in an accident, the insurance company won't cover the mods, and if its your fault or if the circumstances are unusual, they may simply cancel your policy.

My understanding is that if the other party is at fault, they (or their insurance company) have to pay for all damage done, which would include mods. But if you are at fault and didn't notify your insurance company when renewing your policy, it's not covered. Sometimes they pay for that anyway, but lately they tell you you're SOL. But when you're not at fault, you don't have to have reported it to anyone, because the other person's insurance pays for it, even if you didn't have CC coverage on your own policy, so it doesn't matter if the car itself was even insured to begin with. Liability and CC are different.

depends on ur insurance's policy and ur record...

im under my moms name and i got into an accident. its really up to the insurance ur dealing with (if its ur's or not, it doesnt matter). my insurance knew nothing about my mods until the day my body shop called them and told them i have an after market hood and bumper. my insurance had no problem with buying me a new bumper & hood.

heres what exactly happened..... i pointed to what ever i wanted and the body shop ordered it. the insurance company said they'll pay for parts and labor but not shipping. the wrote me a check for $5k for everything and $800 (for a OEM bumper and hood) for my mom b/c the car is under her name and assuming she pays for the car....

i know some ppl who didnt get anything aftermarket parts even if it wasnt their fault. the guy @ the body shop said that some insurance companies would tell u "u bought a mercedes not a mercedes with tv, rims, strobes ect. ect.". when i was talking to the owner he said he was surprised that they said they'll cover aftermarket stuff. i guess im one of the lucky ones

to sum it all up .... ITS REALLY UP TO UR INSURANCE

my mom pays top dollar for our insurance. no tickets on her record or mine. she hasnt been in an accident that was her fault and this was my first accident.
and surprisingly i live in NJ

and save ur receipts!.. insurance asked me for them

NOT TRUE AT ALL WHAT THESE GUYS ARE SAYING.... maybe for them???
I HAVE STATE FARM and my car is modded very very much from my system to my turbo plus othe engine mods and body kit. I have regualr insurance nothing special at all. I have had 2 accidents and they have replaced evrything with something better or just the same. I know with state farm anything attached to the car and you have a receipt for they will cover. Ihave had 2 bodykits theve paid for. Intercooler and a Pioneer Avic n-1 which was just stolen to me. All i did was send them in my reciepts and they sent me a check or the item. And i have no special insurance.

if its not your fault the other insurence company HAS to restore your car to the way it was right before the accident and if they dont want to thats when you take them to court.

make sure your insurance company knows of parts, Geico sent me a notice about street racing. It went something like this --street racing has become a major concern so if your vehicle has certain mods such as suspension upgrades or upgraded sway bars and performance mods we can choose to drop you at any time.--

Just some info i got. anybody else reveive anything like that?

i think i got something like that but didnt really read it much. i read the part about having parents pay attention to kids who modify their car might be involved in street racing. while this is not always true. i never raced anyone on the streets but i do get alot of people wanting to race me

My 2002 Lancer OZ with $15,000 invested...85,xxx miles

Accident, car totalled, not bad at all, engine bay not even touched... Other driver's fault as she did a U-turn in front of me from the RIGHT lane, I've been fighting, but mods are not being covered... I can take Progressive (her insurance) to court, but State Farm (my ins.) is not covering shyt. I got a check for $7000... They are allowing me remove aftermarket parts as long as I replace with stock...
