in the SCCA class setup a CF hood puts you automatically in the highest Street class which is SM. In that class he can run against just about anything... swaped hondas, boosted hondas, sr20 240s, M3s, WRX, maybe even EVO and STI not forsure if they can get in that class.

Class progression in SCCA for lancer

HS->STS->STX->FSP->SM

It's massive weight reduction. See the weight reduction thread for more Basically it doesn't add HP but it reduces dive under braking and makes the steering more responsive to have less weight in the front. It's a pretty dramatic rule to include. I'd be in favor of a class jump or something but automaitcally in SM is pretty harsh.

as far as the sway bar is concerned, a couple people upgraded just the perches and felt a huge difference in stability. They are a significant weakspot in the suspension.

Hmmm....I was actually considering getting a CF to run during the summer since my stock one has rock chips from hell, maybe I'll just get it repainted.

Tom's right it is about 20# savings. Whether it's a problem depends on your club. My club doesn't use SCCA classings (mostly becuase there are 3 other clubs in the area that DO use SCCA classings and a lot of guys in the club race with them). Find out what rules they run.

If anyone is selling a CF hood on the cheap or wants to trade for a yellow one...

Hes right. I was put in SM class. Took 6 guys to figure out where to put me. (they all thought I had a evo). I had to keep saying. "I dont have a turbo or awd. Its a Lancer!" haha
I have the carbon fiber hood, grill, trunk and wing which put me in SM for sure. First thing the guy said was "Lotta weight reduction."................... So I knew I had no chance anyway. Its all in good fun for me.... right now... Ill definitely invest in the sway bar/perches soon.

The CF hood weighs I do believe around 13-15 pounds. The stock hood is around 35 pounds.. I think I saved around 15 pounds on the trunk. a pound or so on the grill.. Wing even weighs less im sure.

You might get away with it locally. On a regional or national level the burden of proof is on the competitor that they are in the class they've registered for. It would surely suck to be racing in STS every weekend and then you're in STX when it counts at regionals because you coudn't prove that you hadn't done something or they otherwise looked closer at the car than your weekend club does. Even if I on'y had my cam work done I'd cop to being in SM just because it's where I'm suppsoed to be. If I didn't like it I would either mod to the upper limit of my bank account and the rules for that class or I'd mod back to where I'm comfortable racing.

That said, the Lancer really isn't competitive in any class but stock/HS according to Urbanknight. We just get killed because of our weight-to-power ratio and that our engines don't seem to be as responsive as other manufacturers to simple stuff

True that. I was jokeing but you made a great point.

mabey one of you could explain exactly what the sway bar does. I know it helps the car handle but how? It stiffens up the rear suspension.. I dont really understand how it works. Ill try looking it up but mabey you guys could put it in lamens terms for me. haha

Basically anti-sway bars push down on the control arms evenly until one side is raised. When one side is raised the bar pushes back down on it because the other side is still planted.
