What could cause this other than alignment?

Sounds like this alignment didn't do much to prevent anything. I had this exact problem on my crap 711's in the rear. It was obvious when on the flat surface inside Discount Tire that the wheel was off camber-too much negative. I adjusted the camber correction on the control arm and it seems to sit flush on the ground now-fingers crossed.

This tire is pretty shot on the other side too. If it was mine I would leave it alone. The tires needed replacing anyways. Had they not worn abnormally you would have been driving on slicks in 5,000 miles anyways.

Thats what we call a broken cord... Usually due to aggresive driving and bottoming out the suspension, curb hopping or hitting potholes too fast... Sometimes its a manufacturers defect... They look to be out of balance as well, with the high and low spots...

Is that what causes the high and low spots? Balance? That's my main concern.

if you just got an alignment who did they adjust camber... and honestly if you camber was bad enough to do that... you would be able to see it...

Here's some light reading about cupping, which is what that looks like to me.

Did he ever get this figured out? I was working on the car and I noticed my front passenger tire was low on tread. but the other three are still pretty full! i don't understand what the issue is.

did you ever get your wheels + tires balanced? unbalanced tires can cause wear patterns like that as well as the sounds you hear.

If you hear the sounds at higher speeds (eg. highway speeds) it's the balancing..

if you hear the sounds at lower speeds (city driving) it might be your air pressures.

Yeah, it was the wheels being balanced that caused the problem.

Yeah. Could be that one of the wheel weights fell off or something. Or you're doing a lot of one-wheel burnouts with your open diff...
