PCM/Cluster question

Just a quick question... does the PCM record and store the mileage also, or is it just recorded and stored in the actual cluster itself?

Are you referring to the ECU?

If you get a new cluster, it will read the mileage from the car that had it previously.

You can get it changed to your mileage if you want though. I think any dealership can do it.

Yeah, ecu... have no idea why I called it a pcm.... I know it stores on the cluster, but I was wondering if it also stored into the ecu....

No, it's only stored in the cluster, as far as I know.

PCM = Powertrain Control Module. Just another name for the ECU/ECM/CPU/etc.

yeh its just the cluster that stores miliage. which is why swapping out guage clusters is illegal, cos you won't be showing accurate miliage, it will be the miliage from another car

alright, I was just wondering because a few GMs, Chryslers, and most higher end cars it also stores on the ECU and cluster, and if 1 is off, it throws a MIL.

Really? I could've sworn you could get it fixed at a dealer or something. Or maybe that's only the speedometer?

^People have "said" that the dealership, or one of the dealership's vendors, can do that... But I doubt anyone actual has done/paid for that yet.

I tried making a device that would reset and re count mileage, but it was far too complex to use it numerous times... plus I could only get the refresh rate at 60Hz, so it was counting 60 miles a second (OZ, ES, and EVO clusters are all calibrated at 60MPH). So doing 20K or so would take 14 days... and if it's interupted it would be reset... which happened 4 times when I tired so I gave up. But I went in for a oil filter at the mitsu dealer, I asked a service writer... he's going to get me the company that adjusts clusters. He also said not many mitsu dealers actually adjust clusters, they always send them out.

I was fortunate enough to find a Evo 8 cluster with ALMOST the same mileage. It was only 1,5xx miles off

We should start an evo cluster club. I got one that'll be dead on.
