I'm going to get my lancer painted all black, or dark smokey grey for $200, but only because the guy @ the dealer is good friends with my bro... But average paintjobs are from $500+ here in so-cal.

Yeah I went a bit nuts for my paint job. Mine was about $3,400. A really good paint job depending on color and what not I have seen go for about $1,600.

I wouldn't trust a paint job that costs less than a nice set of rims. If you want it done right (ie. good paint, door jams, engine bay depending on how dramatic the color change is) expect to pay a few thousand.

If I were going to have a shop paint my car the right way with good paint... I would expect to pay at least 3 grand. My friends have gotten there cars painted with tri-coats. They knew the guy and got a small deal at about 3k but they are 6k paint jobs.

What about a flat silver? My Omni needs a paint job bad and the factory color was a flat silver.

all depends on the quality of paint you get and the quality of the job. If your painting the car the same color or very close which meens, not having to paint jams and engine bay. It can be cheaper. I would still expect over $1,500 for a good prep and paint.

Yup, paint isn't cheap. The actual paint itself usually isn't that expensive. You're basically paying for the labor, and what makes a better paint job is how much time they take on it. So usually the more expensive the job, the better the quality (although there are exceptions to that, but not many). There are some shops that are cheaper than others that will still give you a quality result. All I can say is just do your research. Check into shops and try to find examples of their work and really examine them well for any issues. But it's up to you as far as how much you want to spend and how good of a paint job you want. The price will differ if you only want something simple as opposed to a full show quality color change.
