Clock spring problems

Well I was uninstalling my evo steering wheel to sell and I stupidly tore the clock spring wire. I was wondering if it's safe to drive the car with this damaged. Also does anyone know it'll cost to get fixed?

I'm not sure what it is exactly that you tore. A wire? as in electrical? Can you splice it? Or a wire that links something? I have no clue. HA

It's a clockspring wire, basically a really thin wire that allows the wheel to turn several times.

Oh. Can't help yah right now. I will google it and see if I can come up with something.

From what I gathered. All it really does is keep your steering wheel in contact with all the electrical connections (airbag, horn, cruise control)... So. W/o the wire connected. when the wheel is turned, these things will not work correctly. I would say its ok to drive it but I would get it fixed asap.

Was it actually the white strap that tore?
I did that. I had to replace the clockspring, but I got one from the For Sale section off a crashed Lancer.
I think they go for around 80 - 200 bucks from Mitsu.
I dont recall, it was a while ago, when I handled that.
Anyway, if it was the strap that tore.. You need a new one.
The other "actual wires," I believe are for the SRS and Horn.
You can drive the car normally without it, but you wont have a functional airbag, nor horn.

Got a pic of the damage?

heres the link I found this info at. it is off of a mitsu 3000gt but im assuming the general purpose of the wire is the same in all vehicles.

http://www.penguinhosting.net/~bigma...placement.html

"The clockspring on the dodge stealth and mitsubishi stealth allows the steering wheel to be turned 360°+ and still keeps the connection to the electrical components. This includes the horn, radio buttons, cruise control, and airbag. If anyone of these don't function or if more than one does not function your clockspring may be to blame. Most of the times the srs light will come on but only a dealer can scan for this to see if it is in fact your clockspring."

What was the install like? The strap didn't tear persay but it did separate from the other wires so it's effectively useless.

Well when I got a new one, I just unscrewed the original mechanism, and replaced it with the new one.
Im gonna be removing my steering wheel soon again anyway 'cus I need to plug the horn wire, and the adapter to shut off the SRS light.
When I do, I'll take a pic to show ya.

Did you have to do anything for aligning the thing? Also, how did you get to the screws, I was looking at em and they look to be blocked a bit by the steering column.

I didnt break the wires (flat or round) but it came loose... does it wind up clockwise onthe outside or on the inside ring?
