DIY air intake questions
so this weekend i picked up a MAF adapter and a new cone cotton filter with the metal mesh around it, i took out my stock airbox, and put this stuff together.
i had to run out and get new bots that would fit the MAF to the adapter, but that was no problem - total spent on an open air element intake = $37.62
now my question here is that since it sorta "floats" in there behind the battery, next to the fuse box and such - is there anything i need to worry about with it "floating" there?
has anyone that has done this had any rubbing issues or damage due to this? or any other damage?
should i fab up some sort of mount or bracket for it?
am i being too paranoid?

Um, I think most SRI's just float (I have a CAI, so i'm not sure), so I'd imagine you'd be okay. Since its a DIY project though, I suggest using your own judgement: does it move a lot if you put weight on it? If so, it prob needs some sort of brace

yeah she moves around a little when you put weight on her... but my friend and i kinda watched as we applied the gas and shifted through the gears to see how much engine movement there may be and it wasn't that much at all.
i just didn't know if maybe i should have found a way to make it a little more stable.
and i just used the stock plastic tubing from the throttle body to the MAF, no metal tube like with the Injens or AEMs or Ebay ones...
then metal mesh i'm referring to is the casing on the filter, i didn't use it for anything - just came that way...

I strongly recommand you make yourself a brace to ensure you get the most life out of your filter. After some time, the filter will show signs of wear if it bang around. Mine did at first and I even punctured a hole trough it because it banged on a bolt (I always keep the bolts in their designated holes when I remove a part).
You could buy a length of no so thick metal at home depot, bend it to desired shape, have 1 end bolted to 1 bolt on the maf adapter plate, and the other end bolted to where the stock box was originaly bolted. That worked really well for me, and it was cheap and easy to do.
Zip ties will keep it from banging around but it will not keep the intake steady. Who knows what can happen over an extended period of time. A DIY braket will keep the intake from moving at all(or almost, give or take engine movement), and it will ensure there is no unecessary stress applied to the rubber tube that connects the maf to the throttle body.
If filter/maf bangs around for an extended period of time, even though it's unlikely, it could end up ripping the rubber hose from the throttle body.
Using a custom made braket will also let you aim the filter toward the location that seems to have to better air flow. Zip ties won't let you do that since there will still be extensive play.

^yeh you are probably right.
i tried to fab up a bracket but i didn't have the time. I had my intake for about a year with the zip ties with no problems, although i did end up with a small indent into the filter from the zip tie. Nothing major though.

I have the same thing, and used the zip tie method. It worked great, but after awhile I just went to the Spectre section at Pepboys and got the T-Bolt clamp and the cheap $5 mounting kit. $12 total, and it is securely mounted and not touching anything.
BTW what kind of filter is that? Kind of looks like the Spectre Power Adder.

thanks alot guys, i needed to make sure i'd be okay for a little bit leaving it like that ... i'll be stopping in either at Pep Boys in a day or two or bending up a bracket or something.
My point was that I have a SRI and a brace. I think a brace would be a good idea cause like was said. If it bangs around it could damage the filter. or the filter could even fall off.
