Its not a guarantee that they will read it/adhere to it, but if anything its there.
I talked to my dad and he said that doesn`t matter about their policies, if they tow your car they are supposed to tell which type ie front wheel or AWD and then tow appropriately, essentially its still my property and any damage has to be paid for or they go to court, most companies will pay for the damages and not go through the hassles of court others would fight.
I dont think so.
But the reason i asked was, I saw a 04 Corolla get pulled out of its spot, and they had the ebrake on, so as you can imagine it sounded as if the car was speeding and just slammed the brakes!
The tow picked it up from the back, pulled it out of its parking spot onto the roads, and then came around the front and I believe he took it from there.
I didnt see anything else because I was distracted by a man who was flipping the birdie at the rent-a-cop who called the tow truck and yelling at him, while the rent-a-cop laughed and waved back, So I dont know if he opened it to release the ebrake.
and luckily my girl friends friends were nearby and gave us a lift to the tow garage, which was around the corner.

I have had my car towed 5 times. I won't go into the details, it was my fault *end of story* but it was always towed after the car was entered into through the window and the brake was released. This is the standerd practice of most towing companies, as pointed out by other posters. Not that they care about your car, they care about thier tow truck... dragging a car a few blocks isn't good for the truck.
Also to the guy that posted about if the towing company does damage to your car, specifically that if there is damage that the towing company is responsilbe: Yes they are responsible, although they are not liable. In other words, according to the law they don't have to pay for any damage, ie the actions of towing the car caused damage. However, they are not liable and can not be charge with the damage. Again depending on the state.
In addition, a towing company is doing a service, usually with the consent of a property owner but not in conjunction for a kick back. Sometimes a property owner will even contract and pay a towing company to tow cars. The property owner is concerned with losing business becuase you are parked in their lot, and not patronizing their establishment. Espcially for a busy establishment, if their lot is full of people not patronizing their establishment it is within the right of the owner to have the offending car towed.
The towing company is invited onto the property to tow a car when it doesn't belong... in this case it was pointed out by two security guards after seeing the OP leave the lot. There is no kick back to the property owner. The incentive to the business owner/Property owner is to keep the lot clear.
By the way you got a good deal. Each time I was towed it cost anywhere from 120-190 for me.

wait ... even if your car is AWD and they use a flat bed they would still need to drag it. and how would they roll it off the flat bed with out the keys?... sucks man.. they should at least said to you "you can't park here or you will get towed" instead of watching and laughing.
