Fuel Comsumption Gauge Questions

I recently purchased a 2008 Lancer SE. I am noticing the fuel consumption gauge shows that im burning 20+litres per 100km while in idle. For you americans Im not sure how your gauge is set up but that would be like nearing the Zero or LOW MPG end of your bar graph. high end of the chart. as soon as i start driving it goes down to a normal level then stop at a red light and up to 20+. But why so high in parked idle. I cant remember if its always been like this or just started doing this.

Does it show maxed out in idle on yours as well?

Ive never noticed on idle but when I coast or when shifting the guage does go to maximum, so Id imagine it would do the same at idle.

Just seems strange to be at 750-1000 RPM and showing maxed out fuel consumption... worried i might have messed something up when i drove over a big chunk of ice the other day.

You know how it is with a brand new car and then you hit something. one day i thought i could smell gas from inside the car then noticed the gauge was doing that ,.. perhaps just getting paranoid.

did u check the unit ur using?
L/100km and km/L makes the difference

L/100km -> LOW number = less fuel consumption
km/L -> HIGH number = less fuel consumption

Mine sits at "---" when at idle. Keep in mind it isn't a fuel consumption graph, but a MPG, or in your case, km/L. I would think it makes sense that if you are burning fuel and not moving, it would register as 0 MPG?

You're overthinking it. It's not registering any data, so it just says "---".

if your moving and you get off the gas but are still in gear then the fuel injectors shut off so you get the max fuel economy, cause your not using any gas to keep the engine going and you are still moving. oppisite when you are idling, using gas to idle the engine and not moving so your fuel economy sucks. when i was parking outside in the winter, i let it warm up for like 10 mins each day and got like 12l/100km rating, now that i have underground heated parking, i get like 8l/100km.

Hi guys !

My Lancer have an 14-15 L / 100 km.
That's outrageous , it's impossible from 9% in the City to 14-15% mixt...
I called the dealer and they giving me the .... that maybe I'm driving to fast or with too high RPM, or that I can bring the car to inspection but if they don't find a problem I have to pay 100 bucks. They said if in my panel it's not blinking the "check engine" sign there's no problem.

I can't believe them. On the highway I'm not going more than 2200 RPM or let's say 2500, but occasionally, and in the city I'm trying to avoid high RPM or sport type of driving.

I have only 8600 km on board, it's impossible this consumption.

Zen, don't rely on your computer, it is inaccurate, there are a few setting with it, average and instant. You may have your on instant. Also record km's then fill up your tank, I get on average 500Kms with 49-50 L. Thats just under 10L per 100kms and thats half highway driving.

I did it too, in 2 different ways :

1. Fill up the tank - when the red light star blinking read the how many km I did,
and everytime is around 330 km.
2. Fill up the tank - when I reached 100 km - fill up again too see how much can I pour in the tank - so 15 L.

Is there any other way ?

Wait a second, do you have standard or CVT ?
I guess you have standard.

Hmm... maybe the CVT is the problem?

wow...that is high....how many kms on it? They do say to wait until after 10000 kms to start seeing improvements in fuel economy, as the engine is truly worn in then. I saw maybe 20-30 kms a tank.

That is pretty crappy fuel economy. Even right off the start(25kms) my tank lasted somewhere into the low 400's I believe.

ZEN- which dealer are you going to? I would highly recommend north shore mitsubishi, had nothing but great service there, but they know I am a certified heavy duty tech, so maybe that makes the difference when you know as much as them sometimes :P

listen to your tank not the computer, let it idle for longer on one tank, see if you get less miles to that tank
