Stock Limitations
Stock Limitations
A long time, Claudius started a thread about this subject for the 63 engines. I figure, why not start one for the 94s. If you have any information to the limitations of the stock parts of the lancer, be it rods, pistons, valves, exhaust, suspension, cup holders....go ahead and list it here. And since Claudius' thread has been yanked from the boards, we should start a fresh thread on the Evo tech boards.

What I'm gonna do is kinda make a faq, so if people can post some questions or parts that should be covered, over say a 1 week period, I'll compile it all, and repost a new thread with the questions and answers in an easy to navigate sort of way. So...that's till Aug 7th. get to posting!
Where to start...obnoxiously weak piston area, entirely to long con rods (which makes them awful at higher revs and they're entirely to thin as well), compression ratio just a smidgen to high for truly effective boosting, difficult camshaft removal/installation, aaaand...that's about it off the top of my head. The chassis and suspension for a compact sedan are heads and shoulders above the competition albeit the decision to have a different suspension setup between models was a poor call regardless of it saved cash money on the machine itself.
Hmm...to add to that, I would have to say brake rotors and calipers seem too small to be able to apply proper braking force at high speeds. not exactly a limitation, but something unnerving to me since i've been changing my drivebelt on the tempo way too much lately. The drivebelt chain (as in series of components, not a chain itself) looks really hard to get at, so if something were to happen to it, it would be a pain to fix. I'd hate for that alternator to go bad...
Oooh, forgot about brakes but there is the Wilwood kit out which seems appropriate enough for boosted Lancers. As for the timing belt, if that goes it really wouldn't matter to much how hard it would be to service it because odds are you'd have some bent valves to go along with that.
