Good Mitsu Tuners in US for Evos

Hey Guys, I am going to get my EVO hopefully by Dec or Jan. You guys know what tuners out here in the California that know their sh*t when it comes to Evos? This is going to be my first Japanese car so I am unfamiliar with this scene. I have owned 6 German cars so far and now am converted.

I don't want my Evo to sound like a ricer. I'm just too old for that noisy Sh*t. They sound like Kazoos to me. What exhaust system out there is pretty quiet and breathes well?

My buddy has a deposit on a STI WRX and planning on modding it out. We plan to race at the track and at the canyons. He told me to get the HKS power suction kit, turbo timer, BOV, electronic valve control, exhaust system, and strut bars. What do you guys think about those parts just for starters? Would anything else be good to add into the mix? What brands are good for these parts? Thanks

Dr.Evo

God....the man asks for an honest answer and you give him stickers....you guys are horrible.

Dr. Evo....I don't think there's much to offer as far as Evo goes. I mean obviously you can look around for tuners for the 4G63, so you can check that out, but I don't know if there's anybody out there in Cali. that'd be able to fully tune that thing quite yet.

As far as yer mod choices....yer list looks pretty good.

I put up a list in the newbie forum of a couple places that you can check out parts for the Evo. I'm starting to become a big fan of the 420 tuned packages.

Since you're in S.Cal the two tuners that I know of are Road Race Engineering and Millen Racing. Even though the Evos are new to the US market I know that RRE has done quite a bit of work on competion Evos. Millen racing also has done quite a bit of work and they race their own Evo as well. Both are located in Huntington Beach. I'd give RRE a call, they've been tuning the 4G63 motor and have tons of experience plus, Mike W., owner runs a real good shop. No BS and always gives great customer support.

Dr.Evo,

I am looking into this right now. I’m one of the lucky ones getting an JDM EVO VII this summer. I am also older and live in California. I want good power with out losing too much down low or being loud.

Here is what I have found:

Intake:

The HKS suction kit make great power. But it is pretty loud when under load. Also the filter doesn’t filter well.

I am going with either the hybrid hks/Apexi suction kit or their replacement panel filter.

Exhaust:

Ideally I would buy a Power Engineering (PE) full system with their hi flow cat. Currently it is not available for a LHD EVO Vii.

Second choice would be a: PE EV75 down pipe -> Random Technology -> a HKS Super dragger cat back.

Third choice: HKS GT extension (their name for a turbo elbow and down pipe) -> random technology cat -> a HKS Super dragger cat back.

Fourth choice: Some Japanese turbo elbow (Deck, Carbing, Gp Exas, Cusco) -> Japanese SS Down pipe-> random technology cat -> a HKS Super dragger cat back.

Other options:
A random technology cat -> a HKS Super dragger cat back (Down pipe to be added later)
A Haywood and Scott full system (I have heard that they are loud)
An RC developments exhaust (maybe the same as H&S)
A CB power down pipe with integrated elbow -> random technology cat -> a HKS Super dragger cat back

I believe the turbo elbow is very important. I need to check that the Japanese turbo outlets are compatible with the chosen down tube and the down tube with the cat. All of this assumes that the LHD and RHD exhausts are the same.

My car also has a Motec M48 pro so any addons will be fully taken advantage of by the ECU.

UK STi. Compared to and UK EVO VII

Facts:
The EVO is close to 200 pound lighter.
The EVO handles better (I will believe this till proven wrong)
The 4G63 makes more power and torque than the EJ20T.
The 4G63 makes more power any given boost level
I predict EVO should have less trouble with emissions than the EJ20T

Thanks for the info guys. Eric, I would love to check out your E7 this summer if possible. Your setup sounds pretty sweet. Are you in northern or southern Cali? Let us know how you upgrades work out. How much did your Motec cost and what are the performance benifits it will provide compared to other ECUs?

Southern Cali. If your around and we can hook up, sure lets go for a ride.

Main benefit of the motec is the fact that it has an available OBD-II module so I can have an EVO at all. Also I can tune it to do damn near anything I want from ALS to Launch control. I will also have Data logging which is important for me.

Dr. Evo,

If you want to take it to the track change the suspension and think about a boost controller. Also upgrade hoses and cooling if you are going to drive it hard in the summer.

Would very much like the Motec ECU but I will not be upgrading my car for a while.

There are a lot of japanese tuning companies that are setting up operations in the U.S.
I am sure HKS will be all over the Evo, as well as Signal, and I heard Top Secret are opening a shop in CA. So keep your eyes open for top Japanese tuners in this country, in the near future.

Cool Evo Mods

Hey Hooby,

I was wondering if you could direct me to some of the Evo mod sites you were referring too... I would love to mod my Evo to 420hp .

Can the stock Evo block take 420?

Thanks,

Pjork
