Unhappy Sooo...yeah. My car scared the $**+ out of me yesterday!

Well, almost. Just recently turboed about a month ago and yesterday had to make about a 150 mile trip. So I had my mother and grandmother in the car and turned on the AC for them since I usually always ride with my windows down. We're on the interstate, I'm doing around 80+, no problems. I hit my exit and come to a red light. So we're just sitting and they're chatting I look over at the car next to me and she's putting on some make up or something.

Green light! I ease on the gas...

PSSSSSSH! Loud as hell! I'm looking around like WTF?! Is that me? I look out my window to see if it was the car next to me and it coming from under my car! I look ahead and it looks like smoke is coming from under my hood! My first thought is I threw a rod or something. My engine is done! Toast! I pull over and turn the car off! Pop the hood and more smoke...

I can't see where is is coming from directly. I drop and look under the car...WTF? It's wet?

Next thought...did the turbo some how melt my radiator? No, running fluids...WTH?

The front half under my car is wet?!

Finally I got the ***** to turn over my car again. Everything sounds fine... turned the air on full blast and its not cold...Hmm... I think my AC compresor blew.

Either that or a line busted right? When I touched the liquid it was slimy.

Obviously something blew and liquid hit my exhaust and caused steam and not smoke (thank goodness).

the white smoke was probably coolant burning. coolant is also smily. i would check the coolant level in the car for sure.

I had the same exact thing happen to my OZ on Thursday night. I was like WTF because it felt/sounded like I grinded a gear at first, and then I heard a loud hissing sound. My AC then went hot.. I'm under an extended warranty so I went to the dealership Friday morning and dropped it off, turns out the compressor blew, and sent metal thru the whole AC system which was now ruined and had to be replaced. I'm picking it up tomorrow morning, hopefully your compressor didn't cause as much damage. I'm glad I bought the extended warranty because it just paid for its self... :/

Holy bawlz...

Yeah, I checked my coolent levels because thats what I thought it was at first but it seemed fine. It wouldnt hurt to double check again.

Hey Jellyfishian, I know they didnt charge you but did you happen to hear an estimate of what it would have cost?

I'd bet just about anything it was not your coolant. A/C systems have a high pressure relief valve built into the compressor to prevent damage in the event that the pressure in the refrigerant hoses gets too high- your description fits what would happen when the relief valve gets tripped. It starts venting out freon till the pressure gets down safe, maybe the valve went bad and just vented out all the '134

Well I just picked up my car from and I can see everything on the work order.
Parts replaced:
Compressor: $658.46
Clutch Assy, A/C Compressor: $266.68
Receiver Assy, A/C: 79.48
A/C Expansion Valve: $87.32
Freon: $18.00

Parts Total: 1109.94 + Labor $500 = $1609.94

Prices were for parts... Hopefully your issue is not the same as mine, this would have killed me if I didn't have a warranty.

Looks like they basically replaced your whole AC system. Probably overkill, but if the warranty paid for it, who cares.

Just maybe! When I fix my exhaust leak I'll take it up to Mitsubishi and see what they say about it. If its anything over $250, eff it. I love riding with my windows down.
