is it ok to drive a new car on a long road trip?

Hi guys,my GTS 09 is currently sitting at around 800 kilometer(497 miles) on odometer.Next week I am planning to go on 1000 kilometer(621 miles) round trip.Is it ok if I take my new car on this type of long trip or should I break-in first in short trip like usual city driving for at least 3k to 5k kilometer and than take it to long trip?

Thanx in advance.

Vivroy

The problem will be that you'll be at the same speed for a long period of time, which is bad for breaking the car in.

One time on 100 km drive on highways I couldnt resist and went onto 140 km(87-88 miles) speed for few minutes. Is damage has been done or its ok to drive sometimes on higher speed.Ususally I drive at 60 km speed in city driving and do very slow accelaration.I am not heavy on acceleration but going from the stop sign or red light my rpm goes up to around 2500 rpm to reach to normanl city posted speed and than it went down to 2000 to 1800 rpm is it ok?

If you keep your speed low and modulate it on the highway as not to stay at a constant speed, it wouldn't be that big of a problem. But of course, it's very difficult to do that on a long road trip.

Go for the long ride and have fun. If you want, do 110, then 90 for a while. Cruise it to make it simple. Today engines are not like back in the old days, no more oil change at 100/500/1000 Km and so on till you hit 5000 Km because of all the metal shavings coming off the moving parts (you still get some shavings (normal), but not as bad as it used to be on the "old" new cars).

Don't push it or baby it too much, just drive it normal and it will be a 'happy" engine. After a couple of 1000 Km, let her have synthetic motor oil, it will cut down the engine wear (money well spent).

Just be sure that while you are driving, you do something to vary the RPMs every so often. Sitting on a highway in cruise control is baaaaaaaaaad. Also, make sure you give it some wide open throttle every so often, also let all the way off the throttle. Allow those rings to make a really good seal. Vary everything the engine is doing, while you drive. Your engine will thank you for it later

Thank you guys for your replies.I am going to pass 1000km(621miles) before this long trip so I am some what satisfied.

I will try to vary RMP and speed.

Debating over his break-in is completely useless. The recommended break-in distance for the 2009 Lancer GTS is 500Km and he is at over 800Km right now. Even if he wants to be safe and do the 1000Km easy driving, he got less than 200Km to go by now.

Let the guy enjoy the ride, cruise it and relax.

well if its stick you gotta think about the clutch. sometimes they say like after 500 miles you can bet the clutch off of it but i would wait for a while if i were you. The trip will always be there but your brand new car may not be for so long
