40+ mpg!!!!!
40+ mpg!!!!!
I would like to let you guys know that I have successfully had my car sustain a mileage above 40 mpg for at least 60 miles!
This was done through Ohio (haha the entire state) at a speed of 65-70mph. There were 3 sections where we tested the mpg and the readings we got were approximately 42, 44, and 45 mpg; the 42 mpg was achieved without cruise control while the others were. There was one passenger in the car who weighs app. 180 pounds. Temp was between 60 and 70 degrees for the drives.
Here's my car info:
2004 Lancer OZ 5spd:
-65,000 miles on the odometer
-60k maintenance performed at around 64,000 miles
-Mobil 1 synthetic
-Redline gl4 rated MTL and MT90 in the transmission
-RRM sri
-RRM front strut bar
-Goodyear Triple Tred tires set to stock PSI
-Stock ecu, exhaust, cats, suspension, aero, wipers, headlights etc
-Nothing stripped, complete interior with spare tire and random stuff in the trunk.
For testing we used the usual (and not perfectly accurate) method of measuring the amount of gas poured in, driving, filling up again, and calculating the mpg by amount needed to fill up vs. how many miles we put on the car. I've tried this since on 87 vs. 89 octane and noticed no difference in mpg.
We tried this method on our 07 civic hybrid & 07 530i and found that it is as accurate as the civic's and BMW's on board mpg gauge.
My theories for the impressive mileage are frequent maintenance, synthetic fluids, the recent tune up, possibly my car is running dangerously lean, and a very very low output 4 cylinder!
Just wanted to give you guys running the 4g94 something to brag about

My 03 Lancer OZ 5 spd has been getting around 32-35mpg depending. I have a 100 mile commute (round trip) to work almost every day and I can do about 80mph one way and the speed limit home and I'll go to gas up, do the math, and get about 34mpg or so...
It'll be interesting this tank though because I've been romping on it a bit more than usual. Can't help it I like the sound of my new exhaust lol.

That's not bad at all! That's what mine usually is when i'm driving around town or to work etc...
When I'm testing it out, using cruise control, and driving on the flat plains of Ohio... it gets a little bit better.
I'm really surprised considering a lot of people are reporting horrible mileage on their cars. I guess there could be so many reasons for the variations it's almost useless to try to figure them out. Mods, mileage, maintenance, driving style, terrain, transmission etc

It certainly is very weird. I'm a little skeptical of my own findings. The only problem is that it has been consistent, it's not like it got 44 mpg one time and the rest were in the 30s.
I also think a huge part of this was due to the fact it was tested on completely flat terrain in Ohio. In an area with more hills its not going to be this efficient.
but... it has gotten similar readings in Maryland. I've never checked it in the mountains, but outside of DC it's gotten to around 40mpg with some hills and turns.

I've been tracking my fuel consumption and I can't get anything over 23MPG on my 03 lancer ES automatic. I've got lighter wheels, k&n short ram and new plugs since but still nothing. Mostly is city driving but even highways are no better, maybe even worse.
