C.a.r.b Questions?

i know of a couple of parts available for our cars that are carb legal...my questions are...

1)the greddy catback...comes with the carb certificate...but i heard that CA cops still give you tickets for the modification...why is that?...all the cop told one of my friends is that it is for off road uses only...true or flase?

2)if false then what the hell is that point of the carb cert?

3)since it looks like rrm's turbo is gonna get certs. if a cop tells you to pop your hood and they see the turbo...(after rrm get the certs)...can they still take it away...

4) do you keep your certs with you?

mostly cops give tickets because there is really no way for them to tell if a aftermarket exaust is legal or not all they go by is mostly the loudness and if they see a scilencer(if it has one)is missing.as long as you can prove to a officer(when your getting the ticket taken care of)that it is legal it will be taken off your record.one of my neighbors is a sheriff and this is the short of what he told me.he likes my car as well as other tuned imports and does all he can to help me in keeping my car legal

It's best to have them or copies of them on hand.

Yeah, my thinking is it's easier to possibly avoid a court date by presenting the papers to the officer. Then again if you get a ticket you're probably going to want to go to court anyway.

As a ex smog techinian, it's kinda of a ***** to fight. Don't worry, you will win. You see an exhaust system is one of those things that falls in between smog device and not smog device. Let me see if I can explain this without boring you. As you can see the C.A.R.B. stands for California Air Resource Board, putting an emphasis on the word Air. A cat-back exhaust system is not really a smog device. Yes... it's not. You see anything that is from the cat. to the engine a considered a smog device(all the sensors). Anything after is not. The reason why people gets pulled over for their exhaust is mainly the noise level. There is a min/max sound level that an exhaust is suppose to makein a certain distance. It's in the California Vehicle Handbook. It is up to the cops to make the decision if the exhaust is too loud. You can fight it by having a shop test the noise level of your exhaust and if falls within the parameters then your good to go. Like I said earlier the exhaust is not really a smog device but since it has to do with "air", it falls into the C.A.R.B. department. BTW if you are wondering why I am an ex smog technician......too much bull**** and restrictions on cars!!

All exhausts are CARB legal regardless of sticker if an only if they a) don't tamper with any emission devices (which a cat back doesn't) and (don't quote me on b since I'm not sure if it's a true stipulation) b) it's under the 98 dB noise limit. CARB cert stickers should be mounted in a prominent and readily viewable area of your engine bay. My HKS one is on my engine bay fuse box. The cam is another story...if a cop asks, I need new plugs.

I was under the impression that most Ca cops carry decibal meters now, so it couldn't hurt to ask if they could pull that out and test it before writing you up (as long as you ask in a polite manner and neither of you have already started in with an attitude... then you're going to court either way).

A little off topic but related, does anyone know if RMR got their intake certs yet? I'd like to get the sticker to be safe. Or maybe instead of waiting for a reply on this board, I'll get off my @$$ and call them, asking for one.

Well, any car with a catback SHOULD pass smog, provided the cats, manifold, and internals are not altered.
