Lancer sunroof shattered by itself!!

Hi guys, here's my story: (I may make some english grammatical error here, so sorry in advance)

I have a 2009 Lancer GTS with sun and sound Package. Bought it new. So this Saturday night, I was driving back home on the highway when suddenly, I hear a big crack sound on top of my head. I was wtf?

Then I remember I had a sunroof (I don't think about it in winter lol) I tried to open a little bit the divider and I could already hear the sound of cracked glass. wtf #2! I coudn't had received a rock from the front, there was no one and I didn't pass under a bridge or something.

Went back home and I've checked what happened.

I was lucky the divider was close, I've could have been cut - be blind and gotten in a bigger incident. There was no rock, the weahter outside was only minus 10 degree celsius outside, the heater was on low and music was not loud at all.

The thing that I've noticed was that the "explosion came from the inside to the outside. You can see in the picture that the glass are going up and not fallen.

I've never heard of that phenomenon before and my theory would be a defect was there when the glass was made. I've check the net and I have see that I'm not the only one having a broken sunroof shattered like this (bmw, audi, mini, toyota, etc). They all had the hole in the center and also a explosion to the outside effect. No explication though.

Went to the dealer on Monday. The guys there were surprise by my story, but anyway send in a request to Mitsubishi Canada to see if it is under waranty. And yes it was. Thank god, I would no way pay 1000 to repair something I didn't broke myself. It's also good to know that Mitsu is doing the right thing. to Can't really blame them, but still a schocking and frustating experience.

very strange, sounds like a defect. only other time i have seen this is with 'mineral glass' watch crystals (i.e. the glass cover on the face of a watch) -- which occasionally will just shatter without any impacts.

My rear windsheild shattered one morning with some ice on it (I live in florida so it is pretty rare for me to see ice or to wake up early enough to see it) It shattered into little pieces but I was told it held in because of my tint? Anyways be careful with cold weather and using the heater it seems to make the glass shatter.

Is was only minus 10 degree Celsius that night, so it was not the worst this winter. I do think there was a defect when the glass was being made and with the added stress from one year of ownership, it finally broke.

Same thing happened to my Lancer a few weeks ago.... driving on the highway and the sunroof blew out. Dealer covered it under warranty, and all is good so far...

That's quite scary and strange. At least you're all right though!
And great to hear it was under a warranty.

I was afraid that dealer don't believe your story and won't fix it under warranty.

by the way, your English grammar is very good.
