VIN Plate on Dash

Hi,

Back in mid-October I was involved in an auto accident with my Lancer (Woman turned too late in front of me, hit head on) and in the process of repairs my top dash had to be replaced due to air bag deployment. The problem herein lies - when the dash was removed, I also lost my VIN Plate that is mounted in the corner on the driver's side. To make everything legal, the insurance company had my car inspected by the highway patrol and they "remounted" a new VIN plate (it's the version my state makes in which I live) with the same VIN on the driver's side door jam.

Now, what I want to know is this - Is there not a way to get a replacement VIN plate with my VIN to mount back in it's rightful place? On my new dash there is a mounting spot and you can see exactly where the plate goes. I realize I have been in an accident and I will have to disclose that upon sale of the car, but I'd rather not have it be a HUGE red flag that gets immediately noticed and detracts from the rest of the car, which has been restored very professionally. Does anyone know about this? It just seems to me that so long as I'm not trying to get a new VIN (which I have no doubt is illegal and impossible) I should be able to get a replacement VIN plate to put on the dash. I was thinking that maybe my insurance company was just being cheap/lazy?

I appreciate your insight. Thanks!
