no more threat?
hey whats happened to the Lancer WRC? It use to be the king of world rallies, now with Makkinen out and using the EVO 7, Mtsubishi hasn't come up with a win. Whats wrong. The lancer has to show that it lives up to its name.
It used to be the Group A Lancer EVO owning all other competitions including all WRC spec cars. Group A is less "extreme" in terms of parts and body modifications performed on the base platform. A WRC car is completely different than the production models while the Grp A counterpart shares some similarities with the factory ones.
This is the second year Ralliart switch to the WRC format and with Tommi Mak gone, they should be in the "rebuilding" part of the cycle now and hopefully, with a couple of good drivers and constant imporvement of the car, they can re-claim the WRC title.
However, various rumors from Japan were saying Mitsu MIGHT be discontinuing the 4dr Lancer to be the WRC car base platform and use a 2dr hatchback (concept vehicle shown on Tokyo auto show) to begin its new campaign...

Since the dimensions of the WRC cars and street cars are similar, I can say that the EVO VII is a much larger car than the EVO VI and the new WRX. This might be one of the reasons, also with Makinen gone they are really struggling. And as Lan Evo said the Group A and full WRC car difference
So what will happen? Bring back the EVO 6? And I hope they're not gonna use the Pajero. Maybe they'll develop a EVO coup'e....oh ****. That will so kill! So hopefully we'll start getting used to the name, DELACOR'E to replace our hero MAKKINEN.
THIS might be the Mitsu's answer to the Focus and 206 (soon to be 207)...

not bad, but **** the pontiac excitement front look. The Evo VII isn't as good a car as the VI or the TME. I hope there new car will cut down on some weight and improve airflow. Anybody see the chart from (insert proper rally name here) that was all digitized and showed the Ford and Peugot's going around a corner and then the Evo trailing them, not taking the corners as fast, hitting a lower speed when accelerating out, and not getting the same top speed (or anywhere near) as the Focus and 206 in a str8away? kinda depressing. But hopefully they'll keep the Lancer's Evolution continuing. If Camaro's can last for 40 years maybe we'll be blessed with an Evo XXVII

Agree with P on the 206 design note. What happen to all the headlight design (triangle, going deep into the hood) boohoo
The way Mitsu created the first EVO was because the Galant VR-4 was too big to be competitive in WRC. Then they took the goods (4G63, AWD) and put them into a lighter, shorter chassis to form the first EVO. However, the EVO VII is almost as big as the old Galant then. Mitsu needs another major breakthru in order to be very competitive again. Just my opinion

Mitsu needs to shorten the wheelbase and maybe widen the track even further but I do believe they can keep the sedan nature of it which I'm sure attracts a lot of fans to it, much like the STi. However, if this hatch is the future, I can deal with it but it's not as sexy as Ralliart TME! My own question: who has any info on the Ford Puma?
The difficulties Mitsu's facing cannot be solved that easily. First, since the EVO is based on the Lancer Cedia chassis, they can't alter the wheelbase too much.
And you may ask, why don't they change the Lancer's Chassis? The reason? Look at all other Japanese compacts, they're getting bigger and bigger since people demand more room. Therefore, the Lancer has to be in the same league to remain competitive since Lancer is Mitsu's bread and butter car.
Lancer's not getting smaller, and EVO's based on the Lancer, so the EVO is getting bigger as well.
The best way to solve that problem is to develop EVO into a seperate series with its own chassis and whole lineup of parts. However, this is very very inefficient in terms of R&D and production cost for 5,000-10,000 units of car.
My guess is this CZ3 will be the future WRC platform. Mitsu can develop a line up of HB that produce like 30K+ regular units to offset the cost related to R&D, but not on a small number of high perfomance car with small market.

hmmmm
i dont mind the new car, but really i follow the Lancer for rallying, and replacing it for something like a PEUGOT look alike, with a compact body of a FOCUS doesnt seem much like a Mitsu. I reckon stick to the Lancer, its got 4 world titles, all we it needs is some improvements or the new EVO 8.hmmmm, EVO 8, sounds like mitsu could pose a threat.
