Twice the hp but 1000 pounds heavier
Twice the hp but 1000 pounds heavier
I was just thinking about this with regards to weight and horsepower. If you race a car that is 1000 pounds heavier than yours but they have twice the horsepower would they still blow you away? Or just by a few car lengths?
Don't quote me but I believe I read that 10 lbs. was equal to roughly 1 horsepower. As in, dropping 10 lbs. was like gaining 1 HP. Of course I could be smoking crack.
I am in no way an expert.

Try to find the other part to this. They are doing a 1/4 race and you can see that the heavier Ford wins.

Car 1 wins hands down.
I've seen 200-220hp 1700lb car beat a 3800lb 400hp car
All motor K20 CRX vs GTO from a 20 roll
A 1500-1800lb car with 215 hp can run 11's all night with good tires.
Excuse my rambling but power to weight ratio has entrigued me for years.
Drop 700+ lbs and car B might keep up.

Car 1, 12 lbs per hp,
car 2, 17 lbs per hp...
This doesnt take in considerations the gearing, trans, hp and trq curves--nothing, so while car 1 certainly has the advantage it could be car 2 is much more fun to drive..
Need to consider more then what your looking at.

Horsepower will take over once you hit about 100-110ish mph in a roll race. Gearing is big too, but its a big variable, so forget it lol.
I had my buds 777whp supra up to 140mph by 1 car, once we both shifted to 5th he was starting to come back pretty hard on me. He would have been back even with me by 150.
I know thats an extreme example and much higher than I stated MPH wise, but I made 710whp and he made 777. His car is 600lbs heavier than me. If he had been shifting as quickly as I was he would have been able to pull me in a little faster. I had an instant car jump on him and we stayed a car apart til 135-140.
Long gears and more HP up top will win a roll race.
