help with oil filter removal

help with oil filter removal

i can't figure this out i've been trying for the past 2 hours to get my oil filter off and it's not budgeing i even made sure i was turning it the right way, has this happend to anyone else any ideas or tricks to get this thing off please help

Oh jesus yes. My oil filter was on like glue. But now I've learned.

Two suggestions:
Strap wrench (the ones that wrap around for grip)
Oil filter wrench (kmart, autozone, etc.)

Either one will have it off in a second.

GET A LARGE Wrench. Crush the filter so its like broken and twist was hard as you can. Then when you put your new one on one do it like hand tight.

thanks guys went to auto zone and got a oil filter wrench and that thing was still a biach to get off i never thought a oil chang would take all day

hit the weights!!!! my was impossible to get off too. but i did the same thing as you and went to auto zone

I had that happen to me once, because I used the filter wrench to put it back on. Since you don't care about the old filter, you can get a large flathead screwdriver, jam it into the filter and unscrew it with that. After that, I learned to always put the filter on by hand and just make sure it sealed right.

Some of you have some interesting suggestions, but I wonder if you've actually tried them on a Lancer. The filter is surrounded over 180 degrees by solid metal. You can't fit any wrench thicker than 2mm around the filter. That's why I couldn't upgrade to a larger filter like I wanted to. No room down there.
