Isn't our US Lancer pretty much the same thing as......

Hey, isn't our US Lancer like the same car as the Evo? I mean, i read the brochure i have for the Evo 8, and it's a 4-cylinder engine just like the uS, i mean, it has a Turbo kit, and intercooler, that's pretty much the difference in performance right? So , i'm thinking (if this is all correct), our Lancers could be as fast as the Evolutions>? :dunno: Somewhere please correct me if I screwed that assumption up.

totally different engine and most body parts are different.. Same interior design though! (minus the seats and st. wheel)

evo is the lancers older brother. bigger, stronger and more exeperienced and a little more costly. with the help of RRM any lancer can get turboed and IC'd.

rhyzin Jan 29, 2004 10:16 AM

the evo is the lancer's younger BIGGER brother, the first evolution being a galant. the lancer has been out before the evo.

The EVO uses the same general space frame as the Lancer. I've read that in fact they are pulled from the same line and then reinforced with extra components and then manufactured as an EVO. They are the same car in the sense of styling, body build, sedan, etc. But the EVO is an AWD forged suspension components, turbo designed machine.

Yes a Lancer can relatively easily be made to be as fast as an EVO in a straight line. Even made to handle equivlantely (minus AWD traction improvements when on slippery/crappy surfaces). But the Lancer isn't and won't be an EVO. Make sense?

RacinMylancer Jan 29, 2004 10:25 AM

but as far as just turbo'ing and IC'ing a lancer to make it an EVO... not quite that easy, friend. as was mentioned before, there's a completely different engine in the EVO, as well as an improved drive train, heavily reinforced chassis, and let's not forget that our younger BIGGER brother has AWD...

Lan Evo Jan 29, 2004 11:09 AM

Given the fact that the "EVO is so much different from the Lancer" has been stated repeatedly, I would like to point out some other things:

- The first 3 EVOs are based on CD/CE chassis Lancer, no EVO was based on Galant, only VR4.
- When the CN/CP Lancer is developed, Mitsu also has the EVO in mind for the Group A class
- Due to WRC regulation, no AWD Lancer is needed to pass the homologation requirement. All CT EVOs (VII/VIII) are made due to financial reason.
- EVO chassis is substantially reinforced (spot welds) as compared to the Lancer, so the Lancer will not be as rigid as the EVO aside from lacking the AWD...

If it can be made as fast, how come nobody's done it yet? I've seen stock times as low as low 13s for Evos (mine ran 13.5) but I don't see any Lancers hitting those numbers. If it was relatively easy then lots of people would have done it, right? I fail to see how they could be made to handle just as well either without extensive mods to the chassis and suspension. I'm not biased at all, incidentally, I own an '02 ES and an '03 Evo. Also, regarding body parts, park the 2 next to each other and you will see that, other than the general shape, they are nothing alike.

didn't mean that the galant was the Evo lancer I, but rather the Galant VR-4 Evolution I. parts of which were transplanted to the LanEvo I when the switch in models were made.

EDIT: maybe i'm wrong, but some articles do make the designation.

It's correct that the first EVO is the combination of the Lancer GSR (1.8 turbo AWD) chassis and the Galant VR4 (4G63 and AWD).

Big engine + light chassis = fast car = EVO :p

When they first brought out the EVO I, Mitsu called it Lancer GSR Evolution...it an improvement over the GSR. Then they rearrange the GSR part from the name since EVO II

Gimme a little time. On street tires and likely w/o LSD. :)

hi

Ok thanks guys. Yeah,I know that the body style generally is almost the same as the Evo (exterior), umm, and the interior is almost identical (given the right seats, and painted panels, gauges ,etc), but i wasn't sure about the engine, but thanks guys! Didnt realize this many people would reply.

the EVO is an inch wider and longer than the base lancer. they also reinforced the hell out of the evo too.

I am surprised to see how civilized this thread has been so far... :)
