I was wondering if anyone had a guide or could make one about painting the stock wheels?

seems like an easy mod that could save a few hundred dollars for the time being that could be placed elsewhere..

 

1. Remove wheel

2. Clean wheel

3. Sand gently

4. Paint wheel with a light coat of primer, let that dry

5. Repeat

6. Repeat again

7. Paint wheel with a light coat of paint, let that dry

8. Repeat

9. Repeat again

10. Repeat again

11. Paint wheel with a light coat of clearcoat, let that dry

12. Repeat

13. Repeat again

14. Put wheel back on car

 

Something a bit more detailed? Perhaps pics and such...

 

pictures won’t really help much more…blacksheep pretty much nailed it. lol
some extra notes, if the tires are taken off it makes for a much easier job…if not, do a good job of taping them up.
other than that – just take your time – sand evenly, don’t rush in between coats, let everything dry, don’t spray too close, make sure you keep a good distance and a steady stream of primer/paint/clear coat when you are applying it, constantly shake the can between sprays…not really sure what else to say…

Or, instead of taping, get a pack of note cards. Stand them up in the wheel/tire gap all around. Quick and easy. A great idea my buddy came up with.

painting isn't too bad... I wrote up a wheel painting article on a different forum I'll post a link here.... it's long and fairly detailed... It could be more detailed, but I think it's good enough. There are paints out there that are "formulated" for use on wheels that are supposed to be more resistant to brake dust and "special" wheel cleaners than regular paints. I talk about the paints I used on the wheels I painted in the article:

The paint held up well on those wheels. If I were to paint wheels again, I would go with the same paints... Mind you, I painted raw/bare aluminum wheels. So, the use of "etching primer" may not be needed in your case.

 

^Nice write up nunyas, I'm going to do this just to fix some curb rash that I have on one of my rims. I'll just do the area I need fixed and hopefully I can find a silver paint that matches the orginal GTS wheel color.

If you're doing touch ups on your wheel, there's a tutorial floating around the net that I've seen where a guy does a curb rash "touch up" on one of the wheels on his Porsche with the wheel still on the car... ah! just found it!

It's quite a different from what I did in my article. I started with old **** wheels, and basically did a full resto on them.

When you do go to buy the paint, they have this red nozzle thing that fits on top of the spray can. I suggest you get that; It's only a few bucks and it saves you from breaking your fingers off while trying to empty 8 cans of paint.

edit: I also have a question about painting since I'm considering it too.

What would be a good outside temperature to do all this work?
What do people think about flat black v. semigloss black v. gloss black on a blue gts?
