Not necessarily, coilovers simply give the illusion of being faster since they lower the car and stiffen up the ride. I've yet to see someone actually post back to back tests at a track proving that the cheap coilovers offered for the Lancer improve performance.
You might be right about cheap coilovers. However considering the body roll on a lancer ES, I think that even cheap coilovers with a proper alignment would help. It would need to be set up to understeer less which is the number 1 problem.
Body roll is not always the problem and surprisingly, you can actually increase body roll when you lower a car. Understeer is a completely different issue that can be addressed in a cheaper way, get a rear sway bar and an alignment. There's no need to run out and spend 1000$ on a set of crappy coilovers (and unfortunately the current offering are crappy).

yeah just save up for an evo. There are some lancer guys on here that have their lancers in the 13's and even 12's. And yeah the little money you make over the summer wont cut it. Join the army, become a combat engineer, and maybe you will be lucky to have me as your drill sergeant. Once you graduate you can work on that evo lol
The problem with Tein is that you need to buy their higher end coilovers to get a decent setup. Their Basic and Super Street systems are still cheap and come with a lot of trade offs. There's no way in hell I would use them on a daily driver. I'm against coilovers in general on a daily driver because they're unnecessary for the most part, I don't know of anyone that uses the height adjustment on regular basis, most just set it and forget it.
Most people don't seem to bother, they just run the same height year round. With the lower-end coilovers, you also run the risk of having the perches seize making adjustments impossible.
Do you mean the info regarding coilovers as being stiff, etc? That's based on manufacturer supplied spring rates and published shock dynos. Read any magazine test, the japanese manufacturers are also the stiffest with the roughest ride. As far as quality is concerned, you can check how often they break or need servicing, it's not good.
