HOW TO: Install ebay fog lights

34 Attachment(s)
Tools and Materials:
-Fog light kit
-A ratchet + extension + 10 mm and 12 mm sockets
-Philips screwdriver
-Pliers
-Coat hanger or similar wire
-[Optional] Drill & Drill bit set

This will be a step by step guide of the installation of the "OEM Style" fog lights commonly sold on e-bay and autocityimports.com.
I'm going to explain two different possibilities:

Option 1: The fog lights are going to be wired in such a way that they will be controlled by a switch (included with the kit).
You can't forget the fog lights turned on because the relay will take the signal from a switched power source.
Pros: Full control
Cons: Harder + longer installation.

Option 2: The fog lights are going to be wired in such a way that the fog lights will turn on with the parking lights, when the switch is on position 1 and 2 with the side markers, low beams and/or high beams.
Pros: Easy installation, no need for a switch, no need to take wires through the firewall.
Cons: Lack of control

OPTION 1:
Step 1
Take of the existing plastic bezel. It's held in place by 1 screw. Repeat this on the other side.
Attachment 296133

Step 2
Slide 3 polygon clips over the 3 holes. Repeat this on the other side.
Attachment 296134

Step 3
Spread the main harness and become familiar with the components and their names.
Refer to this picture:
Attachment 296135

Run the two H11 connectors (they connect to the back of the fog light bulbs) from the right side of the battery, down to the fog light holes.
Refer to these pictures:
Attachment 296136

Attachment 296137

Step 4
Connect the H11 plug to the fog light assembly.
Attachment 296138

Mount the fog light assembly using 3 of the provided screws. [Note the adjustment screw in the picture; you might want to use it in the end]
Attachment 296139

Then mount the new plastic bezel using 1 screw.
Attachment 296140

Repeat this for the other side.

Step 5
Using a ratchet with a 10 mm socket, connect the red power wire to the POSITIVE terminal of the battery.
You might need to cut the red terminal cover a little like in the photo.
Attachment 296141

Step 6
Using a ratchet with an extension and a 10 mm socket, connect the black ground wire to one of the bolts on the right side of the battery.
Attachment 296142

Step 7
Now comes the annoying part. We need to pass the blue signal wire through the firewall.
We will create a hole in the big black rubber insulator.
Attachment 296143

It's time to straighten the coat hanger and poke a hole on the insulator.
***Note: Once you made the hole, push the wire WITH MINIMUM PRESSURE and try to take it to the other side. The last thing you want is to damage the existing wires.
Attachment 296144

The wire should exit in the location circled in the picture below.
Attachment 296145

Now we need to make the hole a little bigger. I used a drill with a relatively thick drill bit and pliers to rip the rubber chunks off.
****If you use a drill bit remember to use the TIP ONLY. Do not go deep or you'll damage the wires!
Here's what you should have:
Attachment 296146

Step 8
Now it's time to pull the blue signal wire through the hole. Secure the connector of the blue wire to the coat hanger.
Refer to this picture:
Attachment 296147

Before you pull it to the other side, remove about 1.5 ft of the black insulator around the blue wire.
You will go from this:
Attachment 296148

To this:
Attachment 296149

Now pull it through.
Attachment 296150

Step 9
We need to take out one of the blank switches and install our switch.
To remove one of the blank switches you need to remove the panel that is located below the steering wheel.
Remove the 2 screws at the bottom and also pop a bunch of clips on the top.
Attachment 296151

On the back of the panel there is a piece of plastic that secures the switches. It is held by 3 screws.
Attachment 296152

Remove the blank switch and put the provided switch in its place. Leave that panel aside and take a look at your switch wiring harness.

Step 10
Wiring the switch harness.
First get familiar with it. Here it is:
Attachment 296153

Connect the blue signal wire that we brought from the engine compartment to the blue signal wire on the switch harness.
Make sure you pass the wires over the pedals.
Attachment 296154

Step 11
Strip the power wire (+) about 1 cm. We will connect the power wire to a switched power source that only works with the key inside in position 1 or 2.
Remove fuse #14 inside the cabin by using the fuse puller found inside the fuse box in the engine compartment.
It's a 10A ignition switch fuse.
Attachment 296155

Insert the power wire and put the fuse over it.
Attachment 296156

Step 12
Use a 12mm socket to loosen the bolt show in the picture below.
Connect the ground terminal to that bolt.
***Note: You might need to make the terminal opening a little wider to make it fit.
Attachment 296157

Step 13
The wiring harness is longer than it needs to be.
Use zip ties to organize it.
Attachment 296158
Attachment 296159

Step 14
Plug the remaining green connector to the back of the switch.
Attachment 296160
Mount the panel again by aligning + pushing the clips first and then using the 2 screws on the bottom.
Attachment 296161

Step 15
Almost done! Put the key in the ignition and turn it once. Press the fog light switch and they should work.
If they don't work please review the steps to make sure that everything is plugged in.

Now it's time to make everything look tidy.
Use plenty of zip ties. Make sure that the blue wire is not hanging on top of the exhaust manifold or it might get burned.
Tuck in the rest of the harness in between the filter box and the ECU.
Attachment 296162
Attachment 296163

Inside the cabin, make sure that the wiring is out of the way of the pedals.

OPTION 2:
Steps 1 - 6 are the same as above.

Step 7
Remove the driver's side side marker.
Attachment 296164

Step 8
We are gonna tap into the side marker wire using a t-tap or vampire tap.
The idea is to connect the signal wire to the side marker wire so that every time the side marker is turned on, the signal wire signals the relay to close the circuit (turn on the fog lights).
Attachment 296165
Attachment 296166

Step 9
That's it. Make sure you use zip ties to organize the wiring (refer to step 15 of option 1).
Turn on your lights. Your fog lights should also turn on.

That's it. Remember, just post a comment if you have any questions.
I hope the instructions are clear and easy to follow.
Have fun!

You got the OE Replicas right. Did your Car throw a CEL when you hooked up the relay?

Wierd thing is I had the OEM fog's till one of the glass housings shattered, Not covered by warranty, Picked up a set of the replicas for the housing. (Whole set was cheaper than buying one OEM Replacement housing)

I wanted to use the switch that came with them and the fog light switch on the original signal stock for the HID's, But when I wired the relay kit supplied the car went limp and threw a CEL. But the lights worked.

I removed the harness supplied and rehooked it to the OEM signal stock for fogs

Long story short, I'm not asking for a fix just wondering if yours did the same.

No my car didn't throw a CEL and I honestly don't think it's possible to throw a CEL considering the way that my relay is wired. It's not clear to me how yours was wired. Did you use the harness+relay that came with the replica kit to connect the HIDs or your fog lights?

aj_pierce Aug 18, 2009 08:11 AM

that's what im saying its not possible to throw a CEL. The relay was wired the same just to the fogs. When I took the harness of it was fine, No matter which way i installed CEL. Meh I did figure something out so this in not an issue anymore.

Hello there Bro! Thanks a lot for the post. It really helped me on my problem regarding fog light assembly replacement.

Muy buena explicacion gracias...Saludos

Heliart Apr 20, 2010 04:55 AM

sorry to sound stupid but would I have to re-wire this kit if I only wanted to replace the fog light housing (mine's cracked)? All this wiring is optional right?

JRATC Dec 3, 2010 01:09 PM

Got my fog lights yesterday, installing today. One question.
For connecting the ground wire in the engine compartment, I do not have a 10mm ratchet, so its hard for me to attach the wire to the area shown in the picture.

This may be a stupid question, but I am thinking of attaching the wire to one of the bolts for the headlights. The headlight has a plastic piece, and the bolt goes through that into the metal of the engine compartment. I loosened that bolt, and slipped the wire underneath the plastic part so that it is resting on the metal, and it gets fastened down to that area by re-tightening the bolt.

My question is- Is this an acceptable location for the ground wire? I really know nothing about electrical so Im wondering if it matters that it is in contact with plastic as well as metal. Is this alright, or does it have to be only metal?

In the picture of the engine compartment corresponding to step 15, you can see the part of the headlight assembly that I am talking about.

Thanks for your response. And thank you to everyone in these forums. Especially MasterAK for taking the time to post these pictures and instructions.

However, I finished the job, and unfortunately they dont work. The switch itself lights up inside the car, but no luck with the actual lights.
I went through checking every connection, also made sure the fuse is still good where the fuse wire plugs in, and I cant figure out what is wrong. I guess Ill be paying for installation after all.:crap:

JRATC Jul 4, 2011 10:22 AM

After the lights didnt work I found my switch was faulty. Copper on the circuit board actually had a gap in it.
After a lot of emails back and forth sending in pictures and everything, I got a new switch and wiring harness for free. It took quite a while.
After all that, I didnt feel like working on the lights anymore. Now that summer is here I got some motivation. Put them in today and they work! However...
Got a check engine light now.

Im pretty confident that nothing happened to my engine between pulling my car in to the garage, and pulling it back out with the fogs installed. So I did some reading online and tried resetting the light by disconnecting the battery (- terminal), waited about 15 minutes and reconnected it.

Light is still on.

Anything else I can try? Or is it best to just take it to autozone and get the free diagnostic? From what I am reading, after installs like these people get codes of all kinds pretty unrelated to the work they had just done. Lots of 02 censors it seems.

Ill hate to have autozone tell me that is whats wrong and go get that fixed when I have such a strong hunch that the light is really just on because of my installation and there isnt anything truly wrong with my engine.
Anyone else get the check engine light after this installation?
Any advice what to do would be appreciated. Thanks!

how long did the install take?

First I need to update my last post. I just took it to autozone and got the code. It was an o2 censor. That seems to be a recurring theme in all of the forums I read about having this problem with check engine lights after installs like these. So I just had it reset. The light hasnt come on since.

To answer your question, first I must say that I never installed anything in/on my car besides rally armor splash guards. I know nothing about cars. If you are used to working on cars you most likely will get the job done much quicker than I.
With that said my first attempt took about 2 hours because I was going back and forth from my car to the computer to check these directions every step along the way just to make sure of everything.

I then had trouble reaching the harness all the way across to the area where the fog light mounts on the right side. To do that I finally taped it to a yard stick to be able to reach it.

Then the most difficult thing was getting through the firewall. That rubber is so resilient it really required a drill. I could not poke through t with anything. Even if you got something else through, as soon as you remove your poking instrument the hole seems to close up. Way too tight to just simply fish a wire through. so nervous about poking through the fire wall with wires right behind it. And there seemed to be nothing that could scrape away at that rubber to widen the hole. The only option was a somewhat large drill bit, and even with that I wasnt left with a gaping hole. I taped the signal wire to a straightened wire hanger to fish it through. And again, drilling in that area was so nerve wracking for me. Also from inside the car, trying to see the area where the wire is coming through (so you can see if you are poking the wires or not before you keep coming through) is very difficult to see. I have no idea how they took that picture in these directions.

The last problem is how small the access to the fuse box is inside the car. It takes small hands to be able to reach in there from various angles so that you can put the wire in with one hand, and then stick the fuse back in with the other.
Honestly the directions are simple. And its very easy to see where everything needs to be plugged in. But for a novice like me, you just dont realize how difficult it really is to be able to get everything to where it needs to be.

The second time I did it once I received the working switch only took about a half hour.

If you get them, you will be able to follow these instructions. They really are fantastic. But Id say how quickly you can finish the job depends on your experience level working on cars. If you are used to figuring ways to reach/see in tight spaces, and not nervous about doing certain things you will be fine.

I attempted the switch install and used 14 on an 08 DE; when I went to use the switch it burned out; I can solder it but does anyone have any suggestions to another fuse I could use or why this happened? For the time being I tapped the parking light and that works fine.

The switches that come with these kits are very cheaply made.
As I already detailed, my 1st switch was faulty. Never in working condition to begin with.
My second switch now sticks when you push it in to turn on the lights. When I push it a second time, they turn off, but it never pops all the way back out. I have to pull it the rest of the way.
That problem started within the 2nd week of having the lights installed.
Im just dealing with it because it doesnt seem like going through the whole process to have parts replaced again is worth it.

I never had a problem with my fuse though. My problems have always been with the kit itself. Never the car.

OZR_Lancer Oct 8, 2011 12:00 PM

dang thats alot of work for install of fog lights..... i got mine off amazon and bought a piaa harness cause the one tht came with my kitt was bad quality.... i basicly attached lights to bumper... instld quick disconnects their to make it easy to remove, ran wireing along the crashbar and zip tied mine to it behind so u cant see it.. power was tied to battery fuse is hiding beside the btry tray, cant see it and switch wire is running along fender and into the driver side door gromet where it goes inside.. i put my switch next to the dimmer switch and i had to run an adit power wire for the switch itself...
kinda easy to tap into cig lighter.. all my wires are nowhere visable no need to tap into fuse box like u did

Most of the kits come with button where you can install right next to your steering wheel.

just installed my fog lights thanks for the help made it easy.. but my problem is now that everything was installed n it worked so i turned my fogs on took a pic and shut them off. I finished cleaning up everything went inside about 30 mins later i had to go so i was gonna check out my fogs see how they were looking.. bottom line my fogs didnt turn on. so after i came back i checked everything repeated the steps fuse was good etc etc. what could i of did wrong? btw my switch for fog lights lights up so i wouldnt think that the fuse for that is bad or anything

Check under the steering wheel if anything came loose. If the powered on, that means your connections were correct. Also check the switch because those are very fragile.

so i got my fog lights checked out by two different people and they both said it was the switch so does anyone know where i can get just the switch?

nsxiphos May 7, 2012 03:58 PM

i know this is from a while ago, but does anyone know if you can get a replacement relay?
i hosed down my engine bay yesterday and too much water got into the fuse and relay. the fog lights worked this morning when i dropped my fiance off at work and as i was driving to work i noticed they stopped working. the relay didnt click on and theres corrosion and rust all over the terminals.

raymaster13 Aug 9, 2012 02:36 PM

Do you tap into both the BLACK AND BLUE wires the ones connected to the side marker ??
i m using the second method (without poking the fire wall) !!

My main point is that i installed em and checked everything... and the fogs arent working !

Tristanuno009 Nov 25, 2012 01:26 PM

hi

hi i just ordered those ebay foglights for my lancer, there's a few questions i wanted to ask... such as where should i plug the relay and fuse for the foglights? and will they still work even though i didnt plug the relay and fuse? im kinda new here so im still clueless hope that some1 would help me out....

pepsi_merch Dec 29, 2012 07:33 PM

now that is a long process, thank you so much for the pics, and on a side note, you shouldve opted for the oem turn signal stalk thing. thats how they came on my RA. but nonetheless, perfect DIY if there was one. good job!

Also, anyone here know if there is a way to hook up these aftermarket fogs with the oem switch on the steering column??

ooSupergirloo Feb 27, 2013 08:59 PM

No i don't think they did, I haven't even gotten to install them on the bumper yet because I haven't figured out how, I have an aftermarket and now have to get creative. But when I wired everything up, the only problem was that the relay was stopping the power, I opened up that box, connected the metal inside by touching them and it worked.. weird..

Finally installed my fog lights a year later. I'm very picky about wiring and the original installation here was a little messy for me. Also, instead of using a firewal and drilling a hole, I actually used a side door grommet/plug. Very clean installation and cable came in right by the fuse box. I just want to say thank for writing this tutorial in great details! Cheers

Looks like water got in into your bulb connectors. You will need a new relay (possibly the whole harness). Check your connections, make sure it's watertight

sshastri01 Sep 8, 2013 03:29 PM

that makes sense, i dont think there is a way to install a new one only way is to replace the whole harness :\. but thanks for the information.. appreciate it!

Mine do the same... I just deal with it, they turn off when the car turns off. or do yours stay on even after the car turns off? I think it's a faulty switch... Mine was pretty damn flimsy.:thumbdown

I didn't see anybody selling separate wiring kit just for fog lights without buying the whole package. Just buy the whole thing, maybe in diff color, so u have a backup and can switch your diff. color glass on the fly. they are pretty cheap these days, about $55 on fleabay

Hey guys!

Great tutorial MasterAK, I ordered a set of fog lights from Ebay and started this, but I soon found out that my wiring is a bit different.

The fog lights only have power and ground cables. the relay, fuse and signal wires are in the switch harness, pictured here:

Attachment 328432

The red wire with the white plug goes connected to the fog lights. So I assume it is the power line.

I have a white wire coming out of the fuse, and also a green wire, they both have a red housing to splice against other wires. I'm unsure where both these wires go to.

Can anyone help shed some light? Thank you!

kalmychkov May 4, 2015 06:29 AM

My first set of fogs I ordered on Amazon came with a weird harness like yours. Harness was weird looking and required some work to make it work (power cable location was weird and it was short). I would send those back and purchase a different set with a normal connectors.

SatsuMX May 7, 2015 08:20 AM

I decided to experiment and was able to get them working.

Green cable = LED lighting for the switch
White cable = Power

The lights would not turn on if both weren't connected to the power line, so I used a vampire splitter to have them both connected, and put them into the fusebox. Lights work great :)

SirLanceLALot Jan 7, 2016 01:46 AM

Fuse Boxes

After doing this step by step, quick recommendation. Don't use the iginition fuse as written. You will have power to the headlamps at all times even without key in ignition because the ignition fuse is always hot. Use the power mirror fuse (the 10A one shown in the picture actually) that will only get power when key is in position 1 or 2

Hi, I'm new here, I bought a fog lights kit and then I found this post which is excellent by the way I'm looking for a way to wire this kit to turn on dash indicator as OEM fog lights do, actually I couldn't find it and I want to know if any of you could help me with that?

I doubt aftermarket fogs will work with dashboard indicator light just because it's installed in not factory fashion:) I also noticed that newer Lancers come with fog light switch right on your steering wheel and my 2009 model has a button

Oh I see, thanks for your reply :) actually you're right, newer "ES" models have OEM fog lights but mine same as yours doesn't have any fog light installation that's why I decided to install it manually. However I think there could be a way to attach the signal from the switch to the indicator, may be there is a relay which has that function but is disconnected.

I'm looking for a way to synchronize the indicator because the switch light is always on, but if I wont find the way, it'll be easier to modify the switch light by the way if I find the way I'll post it here :D

Indeed Great tutorial MasterAK, if I could make one recommendation, For Step 11 on page 1, instead of jamming a fuse over the wire which could cause shorts or sparks, use a Add-A-Circuit Mini Fuse tap, I got mine off eBay for $5.99 with fuses and it works like a charm with a piece of mind.

Existing Wires + Fog light button dummy

Can anyone help me out, because my lancer has already existing Wires for the fog lights at the dashboard, but it was connected to a dummy button. In the front there were no cables installed. How can I connect it to the fog light kit button, because it's an bigger connector and I don't know where the cables go and where to find them in the front? Please help. THX

2016 es eBay DLAA DRL and fog light kit install help

Hey folks! I bought a DLAA brand DRL and fog light kit from eBay for my 2016 es lancer and was wondering if anyone knows how to wire this kit. Any help is much appreciated. I know nothing about wiring or tapping into wires. Are the instructions listed above the same as it would be for my 2016 es lancer?
