Custom Audio: Radio Bezel Project

Hey all...

Started off with an 06 Ralliart... swapped the headunit for an Alpine IVA-D900 and swapped the stock 6-disc changer for a mobile DVD player and mounted an Alpine 5.6" Headrest screen in place of the rear armrest cup holder.

Here's some before pics:

Decided to change things up a bit and do a little custom work as well. Moved the Alpine IVA-D900 down below and removed the DVD player. Moved the 5.6" screen from the rear arm rest and brought it up front and fiberglassed into the stock radio bezel. Hooked it up to an Alpine NVE-N871A Navigation system.

Current progress pics... more to come. Plan to suede the bezel and redo a lot of interior panels in dark grey/charcoal suede:

Questions / Comments welcome.

Yeah that's a stock location for the hazard switch on the 05/06. Very slight changes... my friend has an 04 ralliart and other than the front grill and the slight interior changes... the cars are practically identical.

Actually... the angle of the 5.6" screen there is WAY better than having the in-dash flip out in the stock headunit location. Sunlight isn't a problem so far... screen is easy to read.

Thanks for the compliments.

That looks fantastic... very impressed - you would not happen to have a pic of the underside of the surround - just trying to see how you went about doing this - it is very good.

How do you go about installing the screen into the new surrounds do you fit this first into the surrounds and secure it, then install the surrounds into place?

Not sure how you will go with doing the saude with the holes for the HVAC very hard to do you may have to get it painted up...

but very impressed

Thanks for the compliments... I don't have any pics of the buildup other than what you see so far. Basically what I did was cut/modify the bezel to fit the 5.6" on it's own, then had to mark and cut the plastic brace behind the bezel a bit to clear the screen. Then popped the bezel back in, taped up the screen with green masking tape, scuffed the bezel so the fiberglass sticks, and fiberglassed the shape by hand with short strand fiberglass (kitty hair). Then I cleaned it up with the mini orbital sander, then taped the dash trim piece where the center vents are so that I could fiberglass up to it and mould it to that piece.

Kinda hard to explain but I'll try to get more pics up soon... i've just been very busy and haven't had the time to finish this up yet.

As for covering the panel in suede... it'll be no problem... I already had it covered in suede once before I figerglassed it and I do car audio for a living (www.creative-ego.ca).

Thanks again.

I was thinking of doing a similar install and after seeing how you have done yours I am now convinced that this will be relivitely easy.. but I was thinking that if I use the headrest mounting plates for the screen this will make it all the more easier for shape and correct sizing.

thanks for sharing your info and pics

Yup... you're exactly right... the headrest shroud I have for mine is damaged so I didn't use it.

If you glassed the shroud into the bezel then it would be easier to pop the screen in and out in your case.

Good stuff... hope this helps.
