shaved door handles how to?

Is there a how to on shaving doorhandles? The shops I went to had extremely high quotes saying it would take 15-18 hours of labor. I have friends taking autobody courses that would be willing to help if we had a set of instructions. Materials, welder, etc. would be no problem obtaining.

Would it be better to try and do this myself or just fork over the $800 for labor alone?

4 doors, say at least 4 hours each (welding, installing solenoids/poppers, sanding, filling, sanding, blocking and painting) Sounds like they're not out to bone you. If they do good quality work, it's better to just pay them than to fark up your doors. If they're not counting the install of the poppers and solenoids in that labor, I'd question it... but if that's an all inclusive 15-18 hours, save yourself the pain in the *** and have them do it.

That all depends on how good your friends are at body work. I'm pretty good myself so I would do it myself, but some kids in my class must of been half retarded because they tried doing theirs and it ended up taking them a few months haha. I worked with this guy on his and we had his done in a week. We busted our butts off working for that 2 and a half hours a day just to get it done for a local show.

Shaving the door handles isn't easy. You have to be pretty good with body work to be able to even get it to look half decent. You have to be even better to make them stay looking good. I've seen so many people get theirs done by a professional shop even and then a few months later you could see lines where the handles used to be. Plus a lot of places won't pass a car through inspection with shaved door handles because it's considered a safety hazard. There's a local shop near me that is highly regaurded for their body and paint work (shaving, conversions, chopping, etc) and they quoted me $1500 to shave all 4 doors, which included all the poppers, repainting the doors and everything. Seems like a lot, but it just goes to show you how much work needs to go into it in order for it to look good and stay looking good. After talking with body shops and friends who have tried it, I would definitely not attempt to shave my own handles if I wasn't exceptionally skilled and experienced in that kind of custom body work.
