Paint Dash
Paint Dash
Can someone tell me exactly how I go about painting my dash. I really want it to look professional. I was thinking about going to home depot and get a color match for my seat covers I have purchased and ask them what they recommend. Some how put it in a spray can. Then pop off the dash pieces I wan to paint, put 6-8 layers on, with 2 or 3 coats and I should be good. How does this sound to you guys who've done it.
I did mine in silver out of a spraypaint can. After 8 layers of paint and 3 layers of clearcoat, here is the final product

Here is what I used:

Im thinking about redoing it with an airbrush instead, to give it a smoother texture that u can't see cuz it's too small a detail for the camera to pick up.

I used about 5 cans of the silver spraypaint for the 8 layers on all 4 peices. and 2 cans of clearcoat for the 3 layers on all 4 peices.
Costed me about $30 for all the materials (paint and clearcoat).

next time i'm in cali. i'll pop by kareem's and give him 5 bucks
what kind of airbrush would you use? i'm not too keen on automotive airbrushing and what one would have to do to mix the paint just right for it

The New Evo 8's come with the a dark silver, brush metal......right where the a/c unit was....the us lancers dont have that, but i want to get the new evo 8 dash piece, or i can just air brush it like you will, but your paint job came out GREAT....
The steps:
1. Take it off, baby. (the pieces you want to paint)
2. Clean it with mild soap and water. Depending upon the primer you use (and use primer because it will help the paint adhere and give it brighter color with less coats) you may need to sand lightly.
3. Prime 2 (3 if needed) light coats of primer...just enough to cover the surface completely. You don't want cake.
4. After the primer's dry do 3-7 coats of whatever paint you want. Use VERY LIGHT coats. You really only need 3 to cover the surface, but you may want to do 4-5 (again...VERY LIGHT COATS) just to richen the color a bit.
5. Same deal with 2-3 coats of clear coat. Once the clear coat's dry you're good to go. It's essentially a sealant that will bring out a little lustre and help protect the paint from chipping/wear.
There's no real science to it. Just spray thin and even coats to your heart's content.
