When a car is "totalled" it becomes property of the insurance company. Meaning you can't sell parts off a car you don't own. In order to get things bolted down out/off the car, you have to buy the wreck and deal with it yourself.

Sorry to see that.

Basically if you see a 2002 VW GTI 1.8T try to avoid it.

Actually thats not true at all. He probably didn't tell the insurance company that he modified the car, so therefore he didn't pay the premium for the mods, just the car.

Therefore his car was insured and not the mods. You think if he wrecked his car with a turbo in it the insurance company is going to buy him a new turbo if he didn't tell them he had one? No, you have to have the parts on the car insured to have them included on the policy.

The parts are yours. Take them and sell them.

That is true assuming you can replace the parts you're taking off if you want to get technical. (i.e. give them back the stock airbox you were insuring that's sitting in your garage )

or if you purchased salvage rights from your insurance company. Often times they will not offer it but if you ask for it you can pay ike $700 and take whatever you want off the car (including ecu tranny engine etc.. ) but it all depends on what your agreement with your insurance company is.
