FYI to everyone about ebay's maf plastic adapters.
I bought one about 6 months ago, and last week, the ring that holds the filter on broke away from the adapter.
Had to rig it for now, but does anyone know where I could find a metal maf adapter for a 2003 Lancer ES Auto??

It does absolutely nothing, unless you have a turbo. Then it prevents excess oil being sucked through when the boost kicks in.

Here's my ebay special. When I removed my stock inatake, I removed the battery bracket to move the battery in order to get to a bolt or something .. lost the bracket and just recently "re-found" it. Battery is now back in stock location and bracketed down. I have a new filter which is pictured. Intake filter now sits where the yellow "X" is located. I'll try and get an updated pic but this should work.

Actually a Breather filter does do something if you don’t have a turbo. The breather shoots excess oil from the engine back into the intake to then be exhausted. However this oil can build up and form a layer on the throttle body, inside intake manifold, and other places of the engine, which can cause a loss of performance (This only becomes visible on older cars or a car with lots of miles, so don’t expect to see this build up on a car with under 90,000 miles on it). A breather filter prevents this build up by shooting the oil into a filter and not back into the intake.

So basically the breather filter will keep your car running longer and with less maintenance when it gets older. It also looks pretty dope, too.
