What exactly is involved? And is it really safe to do that?

Hmm
I've seen them somewhere for *shudders* civics. The price, I think, was around $1500? Haven't seen the conversions for the Lancers yet.

I think February 2002 Import Racer had a very good article on a Baer Cavalier rear disc install if you can find it...It came out pretty nice

That's the website, but I don't think they have electronic tech articles..if you are really curious try to find it at a news stand or something.

drums no problem
I cant understand why you guys have a problem with drums. At a recent circuit day the only real brake prob I had was melting the paint off the ft rims from heat transfer.Lancers brakes were exeptionaly good

AEM has an drum to disc conversion kit for the Civic EX.

i looked into doing a rear swap on a obs...a lot more work than it seems. Everything from abs sensors to the e-brake had to be swapped out. Lot of time and money for something that won't gain you much unless you are really gonna race your car
