Help With Axel Damage
Help With Axel Damage
Hi, I'm new to the forums! I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ 2.0L
About 7 months ago I hit a curb at about 40 or 50 mph. It caused the front right tire to become off set a few inches. I took it to my local shop and he put on a new control arm and only charged me $200.
After I picked it up there was a rattling coming from the wheel he worked on, I tried to get him to fix the rattle but he never showed up when he said he would. It seemed like the rattle was very pronounced when I tried to take slow turns. Anyways, last night I was driving out of a store and all of a sudden when I was in first gear the car wouldn't move. I was completely off the clutch and all it would do is make a terrible grinding noise. I got under my car and felt the boot that runs from the axel to the wheel and inside the boot I could move little pieces around and the entire axel could be moved back and forth a little.
I had my mechanic come out and look at the car. He said my axel was slightly bent and eventually just pretty much fell out. He said I need a new axel, spindle, hub, and wheel bearing.
I've found these prices for the parts;
Passenger side front axel new = $115.24
Spindle, hub, and wheel bearing all together from a salvage place = $100
Now, I am pretty mechanically inclined when it comes to motorcycles but I have no idea how to work on a car. do these prices sound fair? How can I tell these are the correct parts when I go to pick them up? I have to do all of the work myself does anyone know where I can get a good axel manual for my car or any good write ups for something like this?
-Thanks so much for your time, I'm stranded without a car and it sucks and I desperately need to get it moving!

I would actually try and get the axle from the salvage yard, instead of getting one new. That way it is complete. When you look up a new axle it might just be for the axle shaft, you need the CV joints as well.
