Winter setup!

I recently picked up OEM 07 Eclipse GS 17x7.5 rims for my 09 Lancer GTS. Assuming they will fit (have not tried them out yet) but after reading almost every post in the sticky wheel/tire section it looks like it will be fine.

I was just on TireRack and was looking at winter tires for 07 Eclipse GS - it looks like the 225/50-17 is recommended and 215/55-17 is the alternate. I guess my question is, why is that the alternate? I was under the impression narrower is better for winter tires. They're also significantly cheaper than the recommended tires. Does anybody know why this is?

One other quick question - does anybody know if TireRack runs any Black Friday deals, or if I should just snag tires now?

Any feedback would be highly appreciated! Thanks!
