3rd gear... please help

Hi, I can shift perfectly fine into 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th and reverse. Whenever I go into 3rd gear it does the grinding sound sometimes, so I have to drop it back into neutral, and try to pop it back into 3rd. sometimes it repeats the grinding sound, and i just drop it back to 2nd since i've lost speed by then, and then i floor it on there to reach about 35-40 and go into 4th gear, this really sucks when I'm trying to get onto the freeway. And then other times I'm at a stop, start moving... go into 2nd... keep going, then when i shift up to 3rd it does like a hard loud grinding sound that lasts for like a second and it throws it back down to neutral. So I'm guessing it's not the whole tranny, and JUST the 3rd gear? Is this replaceable? Any estimated prices on replacement of this? Can I just change the 3rd gear alone or will I have to change the whole tranny?

I've been told that it could be the clutch, but some tell me that it could be the whole tranny. I've also been told that it can just be the 3rd gear alone and not the clutch since the others have no problems shifting into/out of.

Please help.

thanks

Specs:

86,700 miles
No mods [just a different mufflertip]

Probablly a 3rd gear synchro. If you are still under warranty hit the dealer, otherwise head to a shop to get it checked out.
You can always try double clutching that might help for the short term.

Well ... not that anybody cares, but just to update the thread:

99% worn out Clutch
90% damaged Transmission

It's at the shop...

car has 87,000 miles. Perfect everything else except the Tranny and Clutch. Worth the fix of about $1,800?

Lol Im gonna have to scratch that!

They have to rebuild the Tranny... and put in a new clutch. ALL MITSUBISHI PARTS!
I was like... No aftermarket parts? n they said no difference in price...

So Total for Rebuilt Tranny and New Clutch: $2,900 including labor.

Dude, get a used tranny from off the net, a part out on here, or in a junk yard. Source an aftermarket clutch kit from Works, ACT, or Zoom. Much cheaper than this over-inflated bill!

There should be no convincing about it!!! Either you get raped and pay what they want you to, or you gather the appropriate parts yourself...have them install them or go somewhere else! Cake. Sorry about the whole problem, but you are the customer/comsumer here; you decide who, what, and where this will be fixed at. Tell them, you'll install my ****, or I'm going somewhere else...done!

Good luck!

Yeah... sounded easy but they charged a $500 labor thing for pulling out the tranny to begin with. So it was either pay $500 and walk away, or just do the whole thing. I told them about the clutch and the tranny, and I found a clutch at $275, and it was the same one I had found at same price... and the tranny you linked me was for 04-06, and mines an 02. So I guess it's whatever. Everything is 2x Expensive here in so-cal

So what caused the break down, do they know?
I guess the pistons were broken, and I guess that would explain a little helicopter sounding thing coming from underneath my hood. They said the tranny was abused... I guess when I bought my car used that it was 'already like that' and in borderline, that for the year I've been driving it, it called quits.

Tranny was 95% damaged, and Clutch was 99% worn out.
