Engine Noise Level

I'm just wondering if I should suspect a noisy transmission in my new ES. Even at idle it seems louder then my old car (a sunfire), is it just me not being use to it or should I take it in to be looked at?

Well to me, when the car is cold and you start and idle, it sounds like a cross between a lawnmower and a tractor engine. But its normal.

LOL evo soul's message made me laugh like hell. But maybe because it's somewhat true. Mine is std but I believe what sounds is the motor not the tranny. And I have read its because the Timing Chain or belt whatever its called, well is a chain (metal) and not a belt (rubber).

Can correct me if I am wrong.
OK Sorry but I think I replied wrong . I believe your message is for an '03. I was talking about '08 sorry.

It's a belt, not a chain. And that racket you hear is called gear rollover noise, which is normal to a point. It comes from the transmission and occurs when idling in neutral with the clutch engaged. If it's that bad, you need to have it checked out. Mitsu has a TSB out on it, and in severe cases it calls for the trans input shaft to be replaced. If under warranty, take it in and maybe you'll get some new parts for free. Mention the noise and the TSB.

Sorry... can't remember the ES is auto or manual... If it's manual, can you describe your noise a little better?

Do you hear it when the clutch pedal is out?
Does it go away when the clutch pedal is in?
Do you hear it at idle? Low rpm? High rpm?

Give us some more details so we can help you pinpoint the problem if there is one.
