which clutch kit to get?
which clutch kit to get?
Ive been doing some research and ive narrowed down that im going to buy an organic clutch kit. I think it;s the safest bet and easiest for street use atm for my stock flywheel and for the fact that im only bolting up RRM's 16G turbo kit. It should be here next week!
Anyways, my car is fairly new, i just bought in feb.2007 and i have about 26 000km on it now ....i drive too much! But ive never abused the clutch so i think it's still good for the most part, but i don't know how it will hold up to the turbo kit power.
So im looking for a new clutch already because i know im going to need one. Now i was reading up and since ive decided to go with an organic clutch disk, since mine is probably still good, can i just upgrade to a higher clamping power pressure plate?
Will that be sufficient? Can you even buy just a pressure plate and adapt it to fit with my OEM clutch set up?
Or should i just get an entire new clutch kit?
The cheapest ive found and the one with the most clampping power over stock is (70% so they claim) from Vivid Racing. http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/21966
The 70% over stock is impressive for the price but it also says the pressure plate will hold 40-65% more than stock. What is the 70% reffering to?
The ACT and WORKS clutch kits and even Center Force, are all over 350$. That goes for the RRM stage 2 clutch kit too and Exeddy is way out of my price range for what im willing to spend on the clutch.
Any input about this clutch kit?

I don't think the organic clutch is the best route to go since you'll be boosted soon. I've read that some model Eclipse clutches work perfectly and just might be cheaper. There's a recent thread about it on here...read up.
organic can hold up to 400hp and ill be at 200. It's got the best engagement, its soft and it can hold up to heat and if it does overheat, once its cool again, it doesnt lose any of its characteristics and goes back to perform how it was...it's like an OEM clutch but it can be beefed up a bit and it's smooth! i dont want any crazy clamping power or stalling issues or harsh engagments on my daily driver!
ill look up at that eclipse clutch thing you were talking about tho.

I would recommend getting a stage 2 kit from RRM or WORKS. I had a WORKS stage 1 on my old lancer and it was great. I don't think you can retrofit a new pressure plate to the stock disk or an aftermarket disk to the stock pressure plate. It also wouldn't be a good idea, the stock disk and pressure plate were made to work with the stock motor, once you're boosted you almost double the power being made and I doubt any of the stock components (save for the flywheel) would last that long.
ok i read that the 89-94 non turbo eclipse clutches will fit with our cars. But i didnt really see anything with higher than stock specs on those clutches though, so i dont know if it would be worth it to upgrade to that kind of a clutch kit.
On another note:
The WORKS and RRM stage 2 clutch kits is wha i want but it all depends on if i can afford it and how long the stocker will last! I keep reading and hearing good things from them, but it's more than double the price of the vivid racing clutch but it's also more than i had in mind to spend...i want to try and get it for 300-350$ max because install is going to also cost 400$. Im going to have to take it really easy for a while! lol

im trying not to.
Im going to take it easy on it, but if i only need a couple hundred dollars more, im sure i can get it soon enough.
I just hope it last atleast a month or so. Unless i wait till spring to install the turbo...but that;s just crazy talk! haha That wont happen. Winter is right around the corner and it's already getting colder, so as soon as i get it, im installing it!
I can;t wait 7 months to get a turbo kit and then get it and wait another 5 months to install it! That;s torture! Im sure you all understand!
worst comes to worst, ill buy it wtih my credit card, but i really dont want to do that as im trying to clear them out and im almost there now! So i dont want to rack them up again!

Personally I would get the new clutch in first then put the turbo in. Don't forget the new clutch will require a break-in period and that'll be a lot easier when you don't have a turbo than when you do. Also, if you blow the clutch out, you won't be driving the car regardless of what it has under the hood.
^^
That's true. Dam it. Looks like ill get the WORKS kit, its cheaper than the RRM one. Ill just man up again and just drop half of it on the CC i guess.
Thanks for crushing my dreams and making me go into debt again ambystom01.

Just for an idea I bought the Unorthodox Racing ceramic puck clutch and was suprised by the street ability of it. It shutters a little if you are gental with it. Other then that it's incrediably smooth and holds like a clamp. It was also 2 lbs. lighter then the worn stock clutch. It does require the aluminum flywheel with the steel inserts, but it's well worth the money.
Here is my .02 cents.
First of all you say they can hold 400hp. That is BS! You cannot say that because there is not a specified RPM. They can only be rated with tq or hp @ a RPM.
If you are worried about engagement just make sure you get a disk and not a puck clutch. I have an ACT XDSS (good for 636 lb/tq) in my evo and it is smoother than stock due to the fact that it is a very strong pressure plate with a street disk.
Buy a whole kit. Just for the simple fact that the pressure plate has a mating surface just like the flywheel. Plus nothing is worse than doing all of that work and your TOB is the first thing to go. As far as inpaticular clutches go I am not familiar with lancer clutches.

when i got my stage 2 clutch they told me to not go turbo for at least 6-8 months . im pretty sure the only safe way to go new clutch directly into turbo would be stage 4 but u would still need a few weeks. unless u got the stage 2 and turbo at the same time and stayed below 3k rpm for about half a year. but personally i don't think i could stay below 3k with a turbo for more than a half hour. but if u got self control do it up.

lmao XD
